One of the biggest things for me when designing my classroom is making an open environment. I want the students to feel free to express their ideas within my classroom. I would position this couch close to my desk inviting the students to come over and talk when there is free time. By having a couch close to my desk it will also give me opportunities to build relationships with the students in my class which is very important to me.

Posters are another huge aspect of my classroom. When I was in high school I would always look around and see what my teachers had put on the walls. When they had inspirational posters I would feel inspired to do my best in the class. I love the pass it on posters, they are quick to read and funny but most importantly they are inspiring. It is helpful as a student to see other great people who had struggles in their journey, it makes students feel as though they are not alone.

Having whiteboards in a classroom may seem very obvious. In my classroom I want to have huge whiteboards that cover the full walls. The reason for having massive whiteboards in my classroom is so my students and I can express all of our ideas. Often times I feel like teachers are not able to write down everything they want to because the whiteboard is too small. In some cases teachers have to write so small students in the back can not see everything they are writing. Huge whiteboards in my classroom will allow all of us to express our full ideas and give students the chance to see all the information written down.

I also would want to have a smartboard in my classroom. The resources that a smartboard has is unmatched. By having a smartboard I can use both traditional ways of teaching and new tech ways of teaching at once. Smartboards also can engage all different learning styles with the features they have. For example, a smartboard is able to read aloud text, highlight important information, and take notes directly on the page. All of these features are helping different learning styles. The final reason to have a smartboard is because it is cool. Students will be more engaged with a smartboard because it is a fancy toy. If they are engaged with the technology then they will be engaged in the content on the smartboard.

In my classroom group work and collaboration are essential. I believe that especially in an English class students should be sharing their ideas with others. By having moveable desks students will be able to move around and work with different students throughout the classroom. The desk will be set up in a U shape for whole group discussion. By doing a U shape students will be able to communicate with the whole groups throughout discussion.

Located on the whiteboard will be the rules for my classroom. The reason for posting these rules at the front of the classroom will is so students will remember them. If students are looking at the board every day then the hope is they will be looking at the rules at some point throughout the day. By placing the rules in the classroom it also allows me to point which specific rule a student broke and gives them a fair ruling. If I were to not post the rules then students may be confused on what rules to follow and how they broke a certain rule.

In an English classroom, it is very important to have physical books along with electronic books. For my own classroom, I want to have all different kinds of books to fully allow the students to explore. English allows students to explore new ideas and read new stories about different people. By having bookshelves filled with a variety of books it will allow students to explore all new genres. I also feel as though the environment plays a role in the student's engagement. For me as a student, I do my best studying or work when I am surrounded by books. Physical books can have a huge impact on the level of engagement of my students.

Charging Station

Having a phone is a basic need in today's society. I want to build relationships with my students and one of the ways I plan to do that is by having a charging station. By understanding how important phones are to students they will see that I care about them. It may seem like such a little thing but by having a charging station students will want to come to my classroom because they know they can charge their phone. Once they are in the door I will have the opportunity to start and build relationships with them. When teachers push away phones in schools they are building a wall between themselves and the students. By having this charging station I will also make it understood that I do not want to see their phones out while I am teaching. A charging station allows me to give responsibilities to my students; they are responsible to keep their phone away during class. Their are some many positives to having a charging station in a classroom.
