Now that I read this chapter I understand the purpose of surveys and interviews. How data and analysis are very important. I never really taught about why. I really do not like taking surveys maybe because I never knew why. If it is a short one maybe yes but some say this may take up to 10 minutes then I loose my interest. Commercial ad to play a part in being materialistic. My kids watch something that comes up and come running to me asking me to buy it for them. Another is if they see other kids they want it to but later do not use it anymore. Every christmas I would buy them stuff they do not really need. I want to show them to not be materialistic in the future. Is not bad to have expensive stuff or want it. If they work for it and get it then good for them. I do like nice stuff to but I took a class that talked about money. One of the questions they would ask is, “ Is it a want or a need”?. I learned a little about saving. Now you get alot of emails also. Now you got the commercials then the emails . You see ad everywhere. Then they got artist talking about their brands so thinhs become very popular. If I had the chance to do surveys I would
probably do participant onservation or ethnography just so I can really feel the experience and understand .

This topic was about how sociologist perform research and how there is six methods they use. For example, one method is gathering data. Then we have surveys, secondary analysis, documents, experiments, unobstrusive measures and participant observation. One of the topic they used as an example was rape. I feel that is one hard topic to find research on because not everyone reports the crime. I was watching cold case files and a serial killer was raping and had killed a woman in another state. He raped a prostitute andthe DNA that was recovered matched a cold case file in a different state. Once they found the woman he raped and interviewed her once again she came foward and said their were other victims in county jail that had also been assaulted by the same guy but never came foward. When they asked them why they never reported it, many said they taught they would not care because of who they were. Also investigators said many cases are hard to tell because if it involves a person not paying a prostitute or money conflicts. I feel it is a hard topic to deal with and many woman just burry it deep and do not want to talk about it and it is understandable.

This chapter was about black and whites and having a criminal record and none at all. It actually did not surprised me what I read. Even when you were african- american with no criminal record a white felon would still have a higher chance of receiving a call back from an employer. It just sad and unfair but that is how it is. The percentage of a african- american with a criminal record was only five percent. That is extremely low. I feel maybe that is a reason why they end up back in prison.
If I was an employer I would be fair. I would look at everyome the same and give someone the chance to become a better person. I would also look at their criminal background check. One reason is because I need to keep my staffsafe and also if he is a reoccurring ofender and a violent one I would not want to hire someone like that either. I feel is hard to choose a good candicate because you just never know. I am struggling now with overload of work due to an assistant not being reliable at work. It puts pressure on myself and same for the employer. You do not choose who you work with but you can learn how to work with them.

I decided to go in a coffee shop with both my kids. This is a coffee shop around my house so we walked there. It was around 7:15 am. When I walked in there was already some people sitting outside drinking their coffee. I said good morning and many responded back. The cashier was a gentle man who I seen before so I know he has some time working. They had no donuts usually what we order but he was polite and explained they only have donuts on certain days because of covid. I said fine order something else and wrnt outside to sit since that is the only way allowed.
I sat down a wrote down some stuff and stared for a little so it didn’t look creepy as why I am staring too much. It was mostly elder white male enjoying coffee. It seem like they have retired already because they were between 60 and 75 I want to say. They shared stories about their kids and made jokes and ask each other about family members. I saw no one eating only drinking hot coffee. I saw two regukar sizes. Either a small one or a large one. All hot drinks none were ice blended or any teas. One sat down and enjoyed reading the newspaper. I only saw one female late 30s to grab coffee and then leave. There was no music playing and no television. There were three hispanic man to my right and luckily I speak spanish. They talked mostly about work. For some reason that do not surprise me at all. Over all I would say I enjoyed my morning at the coffee place. Everyone was just enjoying their day talking to each other and just having a good time. I felt very warm as I sat down smily faces and just positive energy. They all were drinking hot coffee even though it was kind of warm outside. Before zi left they asked me about my kids being in school so I told them online learning just getting some breakfast before they start. They allwaved goodbye to me.

One experience I got in trouble as a group was when I was younger I was grabbing fruit from a neighbors house. Growing up their were many kids you can hang out with. Everyday was something new . We were very active kids. We play all day and we did things we were not suppose to. For example, one day we wanted some blackberries that grew in a neighbors backyard. It was private property and we did not know them so we were not allowed back into their yard. Everyone decided they wanted to go and grab some and I did nit want to be left behind so I also snucked out. Well when we were on top of the roof we hear our apartment manager screaming to get down and she was going to tell our parents. We all got really scared and the roof was so high for me to jump. A boy told me jump and I will catch you. Boy was I so naive. So he did not catch me I landed in a bad position twisted my ankle and I could not walk. Now I was limping and had to hurry up to go around the apartments so I can hide from the manager. Now my ankle was dislocated and had to get medical attention and of course explain to my mom what had happened.

Chapter 10 Branding 09/30/2020

It is interesting to learn that homosexuality was classified as a mental ilness. I would understand why people would view it like that. In the bible it says God created man and woman to join in one. Now days as more people have been more openly many are accepted and niw can even get married. Personally, I am a mother and I would love my child no matter what.
This chapter also discussed about not feeling satisfied and always wanting more. I can agree to that and I can also say their is a few people that are not materialistic. I have shop for things I do not need and also in brands. I have noticed in myself when I am stress I decide to shop and over due it. Then I am crowded with suff. I really did not know about brands until I grew up and was around 19 and started learning. I mean I feel pressure sometimes because I get a watch and someone asks,” what brand is that? Now that I am getting older I just ignore it and it do not bother me like before. I go to the dollar store and shop there and come ou happy because I saved a lot of money. Now brands have famous actors, singers, and famous people makerting for them so is a must have. When some shoes are coming out for like $400 dollars and making a line at four in the morning just like black friday.
Thinking Frames
I think the material objects are most significant to me are shoes. I like having a lot of shoes but I am not sure how that reflects on my cultural values.
One brand I like which I see in a lot of artist is channel. It is way expensive for me to affors and I will not loose money on one item. This is why I am going to college to be able to once have a nice life. If it is not luxury I will also be ok with a good career and nice home .
Someone may resist avoid watching commercials to resist political-economic power over brands. I feel if you do reshape it yes it can affect brands. For example, pokemon was not so popular no more then they got the app for smart phone and everyone was on it. Now I have not herd of them in a while.

This chapter was hard for me to understand what really they were trying to say. One thing I did understand was first imoression and how important it can be. First impressions say a lot about someone and especially when you are meeting them for the first time.
On example , not that long a go an assistant was schedule for an interview and was a no show. Great way to start as a first impression. She reaches out and explains why she was not able to show up. She is given another chance and again one week later after getting the job she does not even say she is showung up. She just does not answer the phone. Is just fustrating how people can just do that and not care about others. Sometimes first impression do not tell you everything someone . People change when they are comfortable.

This writting my William Thompson taught me a couple of things about morticians. One is I did not think about people judging them about their profession. A person thinking they are cold because of what they do. My opinion is I respect them. Not everyone has the guts to do that. In my opinion I would not be able to do it. I wouldbe to afraid. They also make a lot of money like I did not know that. I know is expensive to die but man 250,000 for cleaning, embalming , and preping a dead body?
Emotional detachment is very important. A person can not be attach to many feelings ir they would not be able to do this kind of job. I think one of the hardest body to work with is kids. Just like that man explained how he had to think of it as a job. I think over the years of doing this kind of job you get acostumed, fast, and good at it. It does not mean you do not have feelings but is part of nature. We all have that same path of having to die one day.
Humor? I do not know what jokes they would say and specially with dead bodies. I just think it would not be a fun place to work at . Then we have professionalism which I can understand. A job is a job and especially if you already went and got a college degree or educational requirements for licensure. A job is a job and not all jobs have good reputation and that is ok.

Reading this chapter I learned about social facts of shared values as collective coscience. Which is something that belongs to an individual. It talked about mechanical solidarity and organic solidarity. Now many stores do not have daycares like before . I think Ikea has still something like that. Woman are mostly primary shoppers. I am always at the store. Sociologist described shopping as “cultural activity” and also as bonding. We go out with family and shop around and have a good time together most of the times. Also they are different people from different places. They serve different styles of foods and clothing too.

I am positive if you did not do as he said he would of killed you or me or who ever disobeyed him. I had questions after reading. Ine of them was why they choose to obey? Did they obey because they wanted the $4.50? Now if we do really think about being obedient you really do have to. You need to obey the law and rules. If you do not obey their are consequences.
It appliee to our daily life. When you drive you follow traffic rules. When you at work you follow work guidelines. There are many rules for our own protection so we need to be obedient while we like it or not.

I learned about low wages that are paid for long hours and no benefits. Mc Donalds is one of the biggest fast food places. Yet it pays minimum wage and offer bo benefits for the employee. They also raise their prices twice a year. I know this because I was a regular costumer and I would always order the same thing and one day I asked why my total was more then before. Then she told me they raise prices twice a year. I honestly understan why people do not fight and get this job. One reason is they are always hiring. Another reason is a lot of single parents and some income is better then zero. I do not think all teenagers work at fast food places. Yes you do see teenagers but I want to say most workers are older.
Sociology outside the classroom:
Fast-food wages
I live in California. I work in Livermore. The minimum wage to work at McDonald is 15 dollars. There is no way you are living in Livermore with those wages. If you are single no kids and work full time you will probably earn around 1,200 every two weeks. If you rent a room snd do not have kid you can be able to make it. But if you have a family and need to rent a place. Houses are renting around 2,500 snd landlords want you to have good credit and make twices as much the rent. There is no way you can afford that with that income.

Barbara lived on minimum wage and could hardly survive. She worked long hours and still could not earned enough and had to work a second job. Imagine if she had kids. How would she pay child care and their needs? Yes you get food stamps, welfare and medical. Just when you make a little more money you do not qualify no more. Now you have to pay and everything is so expensive. I like how how she was so detailed and how honest she was. It is very hard to work so hard and still not make enough. She talked about her coworkers life and how each one struggled differently.
Sadly nothing has really changed. Today rent is so crazy. You need to make almost three times the rent, plus good credit, and so many little details. Then it be in getto places. My mom worked two jobs to provide as well. She had limited sources and specially she knew no english.

Reading about Mc Donalds it does not surprise me. They make a lot of money and only pay minimug wage. They announce competitive wages but is more work for a dollar or two. It does not surprise me they are strict on inventory. They tell you how many sauces you get depending on the nuggets you order. Also when you ask for questions they ask you how many packets of ketchup you want. I never worked their but I think they exxagerated when they said they do much of the worker’s thinking. That is how a lot of cooperate offices think. Just because they think they made it easier for you they should pay less. They also do not offer any benefits and usually you get a discount for being employed for them.
When I worked in Burger King we got half off our meals. We got 30 minute lunches. In addition, when labor was so high and we were slow they will send home workers. There was a percent they could not reach so they had to send people home. I did not even know had 3,500 students attend classes at Hamburger University. Then just to train on things you learn by actually working. Which is fries, burgers , shakes.

Victoria is more older woman and more sexual bras and underwears, thongs, bikini, and perfumes. At first it used to have very similar thin models. Now they have plus sizes and their magazines have woman of color including woman with freckles. I can say its hegemony has changed. I do not know what they pay their workers but most of them be wearing the brand clothing.

I thinkis fair for the people to unionize for the amount of 15$. Working at fast-food places is very tiring and also hard work. Those companies are making so much money a day and still they do not offer any benefits or free meals. I would say atleast give them a decent pay.
I think some factors that it might encourage is a decent pay with some type of health benefit for workers. They work in slippery and heavy equipment when they are cleaning. Also they work with hot surfaces you will think they would have heslthcare for them. They really do not offer anything for them but minimum wage. Having workers in a union I think will give them more opportunities.
