Mount St. Helen's most famous eruption occurred in 1980. Lots of pressure started to form below the volcano, leading to the upper portion of the volcano to fall. Because of this release of pressure, the volcano started to erupt. The amount of debris caused 57 people to die. Doctors believe that most of the people killed in the eruption likely died from asphyxiation after inhaling hot ash, according to the US Geological Survey. This 1980 eruption has often been declared as the most disastrous volcanic eruption inUnited States history.
