Tourette's is characterized by sudden movements and vocalizations that are not voluntary. A person with this disorder will experience what are called tics. Tics may range from simple uncontrolled movement or vocalizations to complex.
Tourette's are said to have a direct link to the basal ganglia due to its symptoms and the basal ganglia's role in controlling movement.
The basal ganglia in the forebrain is a collection of nuclei and is made up of three structures: the caudate nucleus, the putamen, and the global pallidus. Along with the thalamus and two nuclei called the substantia nigra and the subthalamic nucleus, this is how voluntary movement is controlled.

Tourette is a disorder that starts in the childhood stage of growing. It is a nervous system disorder that involves an individual to experience unwanted reactions. They are not in control nor aware of their actions at the moment. Repetitive movements and unwanted sounds are the most common symptoms that will be experienced. Uncontrollable movements such as them shrugging their shoulders, constantly eye blinking, repetitive twitching, facial grimacing and neck stretching are some of the visual symptoms we will see. Having difficulties with their muscular body movements and not being able to have control over it is the biggest struggle. Another consequence from this type of disorder is the individual will blur out offensive words and have no control over swearing. They will have a compulsive behavior and will not be able to have any control over their actions.

Lourdes Garcia

-Some people may have tics who are worse than others. If the tics are out of control some medications may help. The possible medications are:
Haloperidol fluphenazine - works on brain chemical called dopamine
Clonidine - high blood pressure drugs which can help minimize tics
Fluoxetine/Paroxetine/ Sertraline - These medications can relieve anxiety, sadness, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms
-Another alternative treatment is to talk to a psychologist or a counselor about your tics on how to control them in public or in general. In addition, you can be involved in behavior therapy where you will learn a strategy called "habit reversal training" where you sense a tic is coming and you are able to avoid it by moving in a certain way

Tourette syndrome comes in many different forms although can be considered a crutch to others it can also be considered as something that is a part of them. The human body is a crazy miracle only because this syndrome bundles up a group of people who might have different ways of showing tourettes. For example, in the case of Witty Ticcy Ray, he himself felt like the tick was crippling him when it came to things like interviewing for a job or taking something seriously but in the other hand felt like it gave him the upper advantage in things like video games. This shows us that the human body although crippled by something can turn that negative into a positive. Things like this really change our perspective on what is really considered normal. In W.T Ray's instance he tried adapting and being normal and taking medications and in his case it did more damage than help. Sure the annoying ticks are gone but so was his edge and no sooner than later he learned to manage his life by taking medication during the week and letting loose and expressing his creative freedom through his ticks on the weekend.

When viewing this case, a lot was learned about Tourette's syndrome and how it has made a huge impact in people and in the medical field. Tourette's syndrome isn’t easy and it’s not easily controllable for the person dealing with it. We have people dealing with tics and changes in their behavior that can cause problems in the way they think and interact with other people. Imagine having it for the rest of your life and knowing there is no cure (of course there are treatments). Some medications that can treat Tourette’s syndrome are Haloperidol Fluphenazine, Clonidine, and Fluoxetine/Paroxetine/Sertraline. Each drug can easily calm the patient down and their tics, anxiety, sadness, etc. won’t interfere that much. But, even though it might annoy some people, others already consider Tourette’s as a part of them. With Ray, he felt frustrated with the syndrome since it brought chaos with his relationships and workplace, but it also helped him with other things in a good way. In the central nervous system, it’s the area that is affected the most and we also have the basal ganglia that is also included. Researchers are still trying to understand the concept of having tourette’s syndrome.
