Among these connections/emotions, is the feeling on closeness. As defined in Ben Ratliff's book, closeness is two or more musicians, or musical elements, acting in the purest coordination." In singing or playing, it gives the listener secure, jacketed feeling...Its developed over time, and its value to the ear is absolute." All this just means that to identify the "closeness" of a song to an individual the answer is that "it depends" Since this trust between the listener and the performer developed over time its only logical that the performer is sharing an experience that the listener can relate to. This type of connection is very powerful because it shows that the performer understand the audience and it makes the music leave a deep emotional impact on the listener. On the right I will discuss the books example "where can you be" by Jimmy reed and how it shows closeness through missing someone. The only difference is that this is song is direct with the message and says that its dealing with a heartbreak. What makes this song powerful is not mostly the singer's vocals, but he cordination between the sad piano chords and the steady piano. These two instruments work so well together that they alone can stand and reveal the message to the audience. The performer's vocals and personal spin is just a bonus. In addition the music video that comes with the story shows that interpretation for the song should not only be based on the lyrics, which show that the message is a type of heartbreak. Instead, the video shown a variety of couples and how their troubles fit into different sections of the song. At times the most emotional parts we see and old couple. the man is suffering because his wife lies motionless on a hospital bed, and despite all efforts he knows that he can't do anything.
