"Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped." (Unit 8 iBook Section 3) Before you begin to perform CPR, you need to check if the person is conscious or unconscious and if the person is unconscious you need to tap or shake their shoulder and ask them if they're okay in a loud voice. If they don't respond then someone should call 911 while you begin to perform the CPR. "The American Heart Association uses the acronym of CAB — compressions, airway, breathing — to help people remember the order to perform the steps of CPR." (Unit 8 iBook Section 3) You need to put the person on their back on a hard surface and push hard straight down on the chest at a rate of about 100 compressions a minute. You must be trained in CPR to use mouth to mouth, which would be the next step. If you're not trained then you should continue to perform chest compressions.

A couple years ago, I took a babysitting class and one of the requirements to get the certificate was to learn basic CPR. We had to practice chest compressions on small dummies to represent a child. "To learn CPR properly, take an accredited first-aid training course, including CPR and how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED)." (Unit 8 iBook Section 3) To help us maintain a steady rate of 100 compressions a minute, the instructor told us to pump to the beat of the song Stayin' Alive by Bee Gees.
