In the song "How Could You Leave Us" by Nathan John Feuerstein (NF), he talks about the death of his mom and the affect it had on him. While the song doesn't use much logos, it definitely uses ethos and pathos. He uses his emotion and his experiences to his story.

The speaker is this song is Nathan Feuerstein (NF). "How Could You Leave Us" is a very emotional and raw song because, it was his experience, and it was what he went through. The song is about his mom's death. NF was 18 when his mom died and she was not there for his graduation. He believes she chose her addiction to pills over him and his siblings. The speaker, NF, is mad and bitter toward his mom and her death.

This song was written as a response to his mom's death. He Wrote the song a few years after his moms death. I believe he wrote it later because he had time to gather his thoughts and feelings about her and what happened.

In my opinion, this song was written specifically to his mom. In the song he uses specific details about his experience rather than using broad general statements. For example he says "instead you left us at the window waitin" in reference to his living room window. He and his siblings were waiting there for their mom, and she never came back. Throughout the song he continually asks his mom questions. He asks her things like, " Why would you leave us?" and "If you really cared for me, then where you at then?" How Could You Leave Us is song written out pain and emotion Specifically to NF's mom.

He uses a black and white filter on the video creating a depressing atmosphere. He also creates a bitter tone by the way he sings and raps. At times in the song he is almost shouting instead of singing.

When looking at emotion with this music video it's everywhere. It's evident within the first 10 seconds in this video that pathos is used heavily. I'll leave many of the specific details of pathos for my video analysis. As for if it was an effective use of pathos, well, I'll say it was. In the video he uses many techniques to get his point across. There are many clips of him and his mom crying. There are also scenes where it shows him as a kid all alone in his bedroom. Through emotion he effectively tells a story and creates a good connection with the listener.

Through the video you see him rapping and singing as a adult. You begin to realize that he is the little boy in the family. In the video he establishes a lot credibility. He shows he is credible because it is his own experience. He is not speaking on second hand knowledge or about someone else. One example of ethos is you see him sitting in his room all alone and crying. It shows that the mom isn't reliable and she is not always there for him. Another example of ethos is when she lights a cigarette with her kids right next to her. This shows that she is careless and her health is not that important to her. This makes me think that, she thinks of her kids in a similar way.

The lyrics of this song paint a picture of how untrustworthy and not credible his mom is.He says "I think of you when I get a whiff of that cigarette smell, welcome to the bottom of hell". First of all this indicates she was a smoker, it also implies that she was a sinner. Another example of ethos is "I'm in a room with a parent that I don't barely know
Some lady in the corner watching us, while she taking notes". This lyric shows that he barely knows his own mom. It implies that she is posing as a good parent just for the social worker. One last example of ethos is when he says, "You shoulda been there when I graduated told me you love me and congratulations instead you left us at the window waiting, like where you at mom?" This gives you the impression that she was unreliable and can't be counted on. While the lyrics have some ethos, they have plenty of pathos.

Emotion is used throughout the whole song. One example of pathos in the lyrics is when he says, "You say you proud of me, but you don't know me that well". This creates an emotional connection because, he is saying that his own mom doesn't even know him. Many people couldn't even imagine life without a mom who doesn't have a good relationship with you. Another thing he says is, "I don't get it mom, don't you want to watch your babies grow? But I guess that pills are more important". This makes you feel bad for him because she is choosing to take pills over her own kids. One last example of pathos is at the end of the song when he is crying and he is just talking. He says, "Sometimes I think about things like, you know. When I have kids, I'm like, you won't be there". This is a gut wrenching part of the song.
