The site is recognized right in front of the present Scaglietti shop, Calle 2 between Av Central and Avenida 1.

The place chosen was a plain located between the rivers Torres and María Aguilar, which occupied a strategic position as a route of passage, trade and rest between the different valleys, and of communication between the Indian villages.

Thus, San José would emerge at the crossroads between the Aserrí and Curridabat roads, with the Pacaca road to the west and the Barva road to the north.

Basically, the centre of San José was (and still is) a crossroads between the towns that surrounded it; whoever wanted to go to any town had to pass through this crossroads, which is why it is still used today as a passageway between surrounding towns.

Although 1737 is recognised as the official year of the city's foundation, it was not until 1751 that a more stable settlement was established, due to works aimed at improving living conditions, such as the construction of an irrigation channel to bring water to the neighbours.

In 1755, the first quadrant delimitation took place, the square in front of the Hermitage was built and the first streets of San José were laid out. In addition, the mayor of Cartago, Tomás Lopez del Corral, ordered the inhabitants scattered throughout the valley to congregate near the Hermitage.
