Visual & Performing Arts Management 2A Assignment

Assignment is not practical in assessing our understanding of events management. Feels more like a marketing assignment than an events management one. How are we supposed to show our event management skills through how we build a website?

The assignment felt like mashing two very separate modules into one short 15 minute presentation.

Lecturers are perfectly alright. It's just the assignment that is weird.

Donor related matters are actually really important in arts organisations, but there is nothing we learned in 4 weeks that the book shared cannot explain better.

Also, the assessment brief isn't clear enough on what is expected. It feels like we are assuming lots of things while doing the assignment with a short time given that we only started the four lessons almost in the middle of the semester.

Student Exchange

Having sat through the student exchange briefing, I felt a little misled about the process.

Personally, my understanding of a “student exchange” is being attached to a partnering school outside of Singapore. Students are required to take courses/ modules there so that students may earn the required credits that would go towards fulfilling the graduation criteria.

But for LASALLE, the arrangement is such that students are required to earn their credits by completing assignments given by LASALLE AND the partnering school. If the student wants to be able to earn their credits just by doing the assignments from the partnering school, it is up to the student to negotiate with LASALLE teachers to make that happen.

On top of that, Arts management students were only given one course/ location to exchange with – which was events management at the University of Portsmouth. This is unlike the many different institutions listed on the website and the briefing.

Just by how the student exchange program was arranged for arts management students, it just felt that there was a bit of a disconnect between what we are being told and the general understanding of what a student exchange program is like.

Perhaps, this is something that could be relooked into? Is there a possibility for students to just fulfill their credits with the partnering school? Could students get more choices in partnering school - Goldsmiths, University of London?

Administrative Process

My feedback is that the administrative process and communication is weak and could be improved.

Whenever students are given information, there is a sense that the timeline is short, and students are given a short lead time to either make decisions or produce whatever is necessary.

1. Would be great to give us more time to make decisions. Sometimes, extra time is needed so that we can adjust our schedule (work/ personal life)

2. Would be great to give us more information on programmes or process. Also, preferable if the information was given in one shot (most of the info) and not in isolation.

3. Would be great if the information on the learning portal was also updated – e.g. Weekly schedule, Assignment briefs. Sometimes, they are from years before and dates could be wrong.

E.g.

Choosing electives – Informed on Tuesday, and asked to make decisions on Thursday of that same week. Was given a short five-minute explanation of what the electives were. Only after request, did they give a little more information about it.

Would be great if there was a briefing to explain what the electives were, what was in the curriculum, how our choice would impact the scheduling/ workload next semester, etc.

Exchange programme – Given one week from briefing to make a decision on sending the application.

Arts Project – Was given two days to express interest in the SUTD x Changi General Hospital Arts Project. Other arts projects will be announced later.

Interdisciplinary Project Student Briefing - not everyone was given the briefing details. Only selective students were sent it.

Submission Timelines and Deadlines, accessibility of readings, and feedback for VPAM 2A

Having 2 presentations in a day, especially when one of them was the website presentation assignment, is overwhelming for us. Think it is safe to assume that more than half the class didn't even manage to rest properly before the presentations.

Also, it felt like the second half of the semester was a non-stop rush to finish one assignment after another, so the learning in the second half of the semester feels compromised because of all the pressure to focus on the assignments instead.
----
Some of the readings this semester were only accessible through online data bases, and were nearly impossible to download off of the site.

Many of us like to annotate the readings & make notes on them using apps on our ipad (or print them out to do so). Having these readings stuck behind a log-in page makes it really inaccessible for us students, and it discouraged many of us from wanting to do our readings diligently because of how painfully difficult to access they were.

We want the downloadable PDFs back.

----
As for VPAM: From what we heard, the module became this way because our seniors said having website building skills could be useful. But, it feels like whoever designed the module assignment does not understand that there is a huge difference between a website built for festivals vs one for artists/portfolios/small companies.

The web design skills are useful, but because it's not the core scope of being an arts manager, it would have been nice if this module was ungraded/kept to a portfolio-making module (like the ones we will have in year 3).

Jason: I really appreciate the effort he puts in for all our lessons. The lesson structure and takeaways are always very clear.

Sunitha: Very appreciative of the lesson content and real world examples she provides and shares with the class. These are all very important issues and we as Arts Management students should definitely be aware about all of it.

Kelvin: Wish we had more lessons with him. He was able to share multiple industry insights with the class from his personal experience. It was very enjoyable to attend his classes.

Shai: His lessons are very engaging. His sunshine personality makes lessons very exciting and the examples he uses, most from events he had done in the past, were very enjoyable to learn about.
