         <description><![CDATA[<div>Gots:<br>*there is a lot of research behind the science of reading that I did not know about.<br>*it seems like there are some important, but not necessarily huge or upsetting, shifts that I can figure out how to incorporate without much difficulty.<br>*I am already doing things that fall under "science of reading" ideas, I just didn't know it.&nbsp;<br>*though humans learn to decode words through orthographic mapping, which requires looking at letters and sounds (phonics) more closely than we may have thought, comprehension is still the ultimate goal of reading and still needs to be addressed in the classroom (a balance of decodable and concept books).<br><br>Wants:<br>*the literacy nerd in me wants to know all the details about all of this, and it's overwhelming to know where to start.&nbsp;<br>*you mentioned that the data behind decodable texts isn't very strong - that was really interesting.&nbsp; Is it because the phonics/orthographic mapping work can be done in isolation while reading books should be more comprehension-based (with some practice of learned phonics mixed in)?<br>*I think what I really need next is to organize my thoughts around classroom structures and specific activities that can really support this phonics/systematic decoding work while also still having a lot of time to talk about comprehension and enthusiasm for reading (I'm loosely thinking morning message, centers, guided reading, guided/interactive writing for the decoding specifics, but maybe read-alouds, many overall units and some minilessons are more comprehension based??).  </div>]]></description>
