I will be required to keep this log up to date with any aspects of the unit you find interesting or can contribute to your writing at the end of the unit in week 6 and 7. Make sure you answer the questions at the end of every week and update with anything you find interesting online about 'the future.'

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you?

Greta Thunberg's speech always has and always will move me. Her passion and determination when delivering those lines is unlike any other speech we are likely to receive from someone her age which makes it so powerful and inspiring to people her age.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future?

My first time listening / reading Greta Thunberg's speech, I was honestly left really frightened for our future. She did a great job in enforcing a sense of responsibility towards our ecosystem by instilling fear upon the idea of what would happen if no changes were made.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they?

Greta Thunberg performing this speech made me question if this will influence future generations of people to take stands like she did.

Main features of a screenplay:

Headings / Titles

Character Names

Dialogues

Transitions

Scene Numbers

In the show 'Steven Universe' (my favourite show). The screenplay includes the title of the episode (eg 'Steven Universe - Full Disclosure). Then as the script is read, each line is accompanied with the name of each character. Dialogues are explained here with clear dictation to which scene they fall under (with the use of scene numbers). We even see the use of transitions. A great example of this in Steven Universe would be how they incorporate the use of a black screen with a start outline, zooming into a character to indicate the end of an episode, ready to transition into the next. Another great thing about Steven Universe is that the screenplays are accompanied with the music that is often incorporated as well! This includes sheet music and vocal demos from either the voice actor or those involved in the music creating process.

Which types of mentor texts did you engage with this week? Which one was the most interesting to you? - I engaged with an episode of the show Black Mirror, it was called Hated in the Nation. This was a visual text written by Charlie Brooker and directed by James Hawes.

How did this text challenge or expand your understanding of the future? - I thought about how it was really interesting little robot bees had been created to replace the real bees due to colony collapse - this seemed first like a really cool way to fix the problem if we really didn't have bees due to environmental concerns. However, my opinion quickly changed when I realised that of course people were going to be under surveillance by the government with a program like that and that's a bit of a scary thought.

Did this text raise any questions, excitement, or uncertainties about the future? If so, what are they? It made me think about the way that the internet is going to evolve. It seemed strange that even in a 'futuristic' show like Black Mirror, there were still things like twitter and cancel culture that existed. It makes me wonder about whether there might end up being serious consequences to 'cancelling' someone online in the future. I'm also even more uncertain about what the environment might look like now because I thought the episode would look way more futuristic and houses would be more automated but things are kind of still looking the same.

I personally believe that she is one of the most influential person of her age to walk this planet. Her speech inspires me to be as passionate about my causes as she is for the health of our planet. Her speech writing techniques are crafted to a perfection, only enhanced by the angst and dedication in her voice when performing the soliloquy like lines that strike the audience one after another. There is a clear and deserving reason that she received so much positive feedback on her speech and is now seen, especially in my eyes as one of the most important people to look up to in this day and age.

It allows for the story to make a strong impact on the reader in a short amount of time whilst keeping them engaged.

Conventions:

I think this theme related to the conflict of character vs technology very well, making the primary theme of the story very prevalent and causing for an engaging and tense storyline.

I think that the setting within this text was written in a very smart and engaging way, indirectly telling us that the setting could actually be within the head and brain of the character.

The climax of the story was written in a way that had a very strong build up, right until the end of the story where we are cut off at the peak.
