For starters, the facts of the case need to be established. I would also make sure to tell the mother that even if it was true that Alice's friends had indeed made the nasty remarks about her, the consequences or punishment can and should only be meted out by the school authorities, who are trained in handling cyber-wellness issues. Particularly because Alice also made an assumption that the comments made on Facebook were about her, I would have to speak to the class separately first to find out what happened. I would also give them a chance to explain their behaviour, rather than directly taking them to task. In this way we can frame the episode as a means for which students to learn what their responsibilities have and should partake in online and offline, rather than viewing the matter as a case of simple rule-breaking and their resulting consequences
.

First of all, I think we should obtain as much in formation regarding the whole incident as possible, including : Facebook messages, who was involved, etc. Then i will arrange a meeting between the parents of the girls involved. During the mediation session, each party will have a chance to present their side of the story, and then i will make a fair judgement. The parties involved will have a chance to reach a peaceful conclusion. I will tactfully explain to Alice's mother why her actions may not be quite appropriate, and promise that the bullies will definitely be punished for their actions. If necessary , I will arranged for counselling sessions with the school counselor for Alice and the traumatized bully to help them through the incident.

I would be most interested in why Alice's mother decided to take matters in her own hands instead of leaving it to the form teacher to act as a mediator, as well as how she managed to do enter school grounds without authorization to confront the student bully.

Thinking from her perspective, her considerations were perhaps: 1) form teacher might be slow in meting out appropriate measures 2) form teacher's response toward the bully might be muted and not justify the trauma that her daughter aka the victim has gone through.

To resolve the issue (assuming that Alice's mother has already left the school compound), the following measures could be undertaken:
1) Call the IT dept in school for assistance in taking down the Facebook photos.
2) Ask security guards + other witnesses to recount the happenings; notify school leaders (HOD, VP, P, Year Head) about what has happened, propose a plan of action that involves Alice's mother and the traumatized student and her parents. Wait for approval being taking action.
3) Locate the contact details of each affected party and invite them to school for a F2F mediation session.
4) Call/email Alice's mother prior to reassure her of that the school does not condone any acts of bullying and that all disciplinary actions must be taken by the school instead of the parent - a move which seeks to protect the parent from being sued by other parties.
5) School leaders (P/VP) to communicate F2F separately (in adjacent rooms) with Alice's mother and traumatized students' parents to reiterate the school's stance, to explain the school's SOP and rationale for protecting every student, and to see what has went wrong and what can be done to improve the situation at hand.
6) reconciliation with a handshake.
7) P to address the issue during morning assembly + all FTs to reiterate the grave consequences of cyberbullying to their form class. Inform on the various ways of cyberbullying and warn students not to tread into those paths.

My opinion is that Alice's mother behaved inappropriately, and it appears that she is unaware that she overstepped boundaries by taking matters into her own hands. As the Form Teacher I will need to speak to her to ensure that she does not continue to take matters into her own hands and try to enforce discipline on students other than her own child. I agree with Diana and Priscilla that it is important to inform Mr Lim, the Discipline Master, of the talk I plan to have with Alice's mother, so that I can plan what to say beforehand.

I will also need to speak to Alice to check on her psychological state, and find out the concrete reasons why she believes the offending posts on Facebook are about her.

I will also need to speak to the students involved in this incident. However, I will suspend my judgment of whether they were really involved in cyberbullying. More probing and fact-finding is required before I can make such a judgment.

After speaking to all the students involved, I will have a clearer idea of how to proceed. If there was cyberbullying, it is necessary to impress upon the students the impact of their actions on Alice, her family, and the class culture. Perhaps they can be involved in the restorative process, and determine for themselves how they'd like to make good on their mistakes.

Regardless of whether there was cyberbullying, Alice and the student traumatized by Alice's mother will probably have to be referred to the school counselor separately.

It is pertinent to maintain the physical and psychological safety of students in the school.
2) I would once again reassure Alice's mother that our school discipline committee and the form teacher will look into the matter and that she could wait patiently for the results of our investigation.
3) I would then engage teachers of the class, students, school leaders and Alice in an investigation of the case. This would include meetings among the staff and then speaking privately to individual students (or have them write confessions/reports on what they know about this incident) to obtain a clearer idea of the truth.
4) Lastly, I will communicate the grave consequences of cyberbullying to the class.

I should not assume that he is up to date with what had just transpired, so I would inform him about the confrontation. Investigation and clarification of the matter will have to be undertaken so as to verify the fact of the matter, and all parties should be spoken to at the same time so that everyone is aware of what is going on and there is transparency. Any grievances can also be aired though I would ensure that the School Management / Discipline Committee is present as well to mediate the issue. I might also have to pre-empt any further aggravation by speaking to the students and the mother individually before the meeting so as to defuse the tension and set the tone for a neutral conversation.

At the same time, reassure her that the school will start its investigation on the relevant Facebook posts immediately. Next invite her out of the school, while reassuring her that the school will invite her back to school again when we complete our investigations. As the Form Teacher, I would want to work together with the Discipline Master to go through the said Facebook posts thoroughly and verify whether if the posts did really direct insults to Alice that culminated to cyberbullying. At the same time, should Alice be emotionally distress by this incident, I will talk to her and if need to, send her the school counsellor for proper counselling. The school should take a very serious viewpoint in this incident and must get to the bottom of it as soon as possible. Should the school indeed finds students engaging in cyberbullying, disciplinary actions and proper follow-up should be implemented.

Most probably, my role will be that of a mediator between the discipline committee and the students. I will need to speak to the students, especially the 'bullies' and the victim directly, to find out what exactly happened. if need be, I can use the information garnered to make recommendations on whether the students should be punished or not. I will encourage the students to resolve whatever conflict they have, ascertain if the victim is not too traumatised, and get the bullies to apologise so that the matter can be put to rest. The parents of the bullies would also have to be contacted so they are aware of the issue and can partner in disciplining their children t to make sure such incidents do not happen again.

Having ascertained the facts of the situation, I will share this with the Discipline Master and discuss how to proceed. I write this from the point of view of wanting to let the teacher who has more experience and familiarity with the situation be a guide in handling the issue.

While it may appear that this suggestion has the consequences of not addressing the issue and its perpetrators immediately, it seems most prudent to plan our management carefully in light of the many stakeholders involved. I will simultaneously also try to repair the damages by making a point to talk to and comfort Alice and the traumatised students, since all have suffered some form of emotional distress.

My stand is that we should gather as much information as we could on the situation before making any conclusions or decisions.

In light of that, I think that the Alice's mother's actions were highly inappropriate and much too emotionally charged. As the form teacher, I would firstly invite her into the General Office to cool down, and then explain to her that the school has a duty to protect all the students, her daughter and the perceived bullies included. Alice's mother should thus wait for the investigation results from the Discipline Committee, and have faith that the school will follow through with any discipline action necessary. I would also explain to her that we (the school and Alice's mother) have to be objective in our decision and must not jump to conclusions.

Where the traumatised student is concerned, I will report the happenings to his parents, and also inform them that their child is currently helping the school in finding out what happened with regard to Alice. I would also assure them that the school has a duty towards every child and that measures have been taken to prevent such an incident from happening again. The child should be sent for counselling if necessary.
