The greenhouse effect was first discovered in 1856

The greenhouse effect is a process that warms the Earth's atmosphere. It was first discovered by a woman named Eunice Foote. She figured out that carbon dioxide can change the atmosphere's temperature by experimenting with two tubes, one with carbon dioxide and the other empty. The tube with carbon dioxide had a significant temperature change. The temperature increased to 125 degrees Fahrenheit. This experiment is important to understand why climate change is happening. Knowing that carbon dioxide can make the atmosphere increase in temperature, can explain what causes many problems like ice melting, water levels rising, more natural disasters, warmer temperatures during the winter, warmer ocean temperatures, and many more things. Even though all these consequences of climate change are affecting the earth negatively, they led to the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, which can help people, animals, our atmosphere, and the entire planet.

Scientists saw how high the CO2 levels were in the atmosphere in the 1950's

Scientists were concerned about how the carbon dioxide levels were in the atmosphere in the 1950’s. Compared to millennia on the graph, the carbon dioxide levels have never been above the line, but in 1950, it crossed the line. The line represents the maximum amount of carbon dioxide that should be in the atmosphere. The x axis shows the years before present day, and it goes back 800,000 years ago. On the y-axis, it shows the levels of carbon dioxide. The significance of this data is it shows how bad climate change is right now. There weren’t any actions taken until the Paris Agreement was created. Some ways to stop climate change are to unplug computers, TVs, and other electronics, buy organic food, fly less, and switch to an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle.

Trump withdrew from the agreement on November 4, 2020

Donald Trump decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on November 4, 2020. Trump’s reasons to leave the agreement were that it would cost America 2.7 million lost jobs by 2025. The World Resources Institute said that calculation isn’t correction. Another reason is that he thought it was just a small temperature change. If the Paris Agreement achieved its goals, then the atmosphere’s temperature would decrease nine-tenths of one degree, which according to NASA, is a dramatic change to the planet because it would be 20% of the increase we’ve already seen. Another reason is it has a negative impact on the economy. He thought that remaining in the agreement would cost almost 3 trillion dollars. However, according to the Resources of the Future, the U.S. could reach its goals with a much lower carbon tax rate over less time. He also thought there would be blackouts and brownouts, which is not true because inclement weather causes blackouts and brownouts, not from a lack of adequate power. The last reason is he thought it would be billions and billions of dollars. All the reasons he said why he withdrew from the agreement are answers based on his beliefs, not based on facts. After the withdrawal, many countries were very disappointed with withdrawing because this shows that Trump doesn’t want to fight climate change and wants to help our planet. Countries like Canada, France, Spain, Brazil, Japan, and many other countries said that withdrawing from the Paris Agreement can cause negative impacts.

Joe Biden and Kamala Harris rejoined the agreement on February 19, 2021

When Joe Biden became president, he and Kamala Harris rejoined the agreement on February 19, 2021. They wanted to rejoin the agreement again because it shows the world that the United States is addressing climate change again and recognizing that climate change is a serious issue. The world was very happy that the United States rejoined the agreement, and Dr. M. Sanjayan, chief executive of Conservation International, “President Biden’s action today is certainly a step in the right direction.” Positive impacts with rejoining the Paris Agreement is that since the United States is the second-largest carbon dioxide emitter, the Biden administration can reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Paris Agreement and they can do more advanced research and develop more solutions to help protect families.
