How My Epiphany Has Benefitted Me As A Future Teacher...

With the two epiphanies that I have experienced in this class I will now be able to enhance my instruction by incorporating literacy strategies in my lessons, homework, projects, etc. I will choose strategies that will be beneficial for all students although I know that there will times where I will have to differentiate for some students. Ultimately I hope that I will be able to pick strategies that will have the biggest impact on the students and will help them the most with the information that they are learning. At the end of each strategy that I use I will ask the students how they thought that helped them learn and if it did help that learn. I think that student feedback is very important as a teacher so that you can adjust areas where they struggled the most. Then I will be able to include a new literacy strategy in that area. In the end, this class has helped me develop a sense of literacy and how it is and can be applied in the classroom.

How My Epiphany Has Helped Me Grow...

These experiences have helped me grow because I can now determine when I am actively involved in a class or to even give a proper definition of the word literate and literacy. With this new revelation and learning experience has impacted me in a way where it makes sense that everyone is being literate almost every second of every day. All individuals have either created or listened to a form of literacy whether it being a movie, music, a form of writing, browsing the web, etc. Before this class I would not have categorized me watching HGTV or browsing Facebook would be a form of literacy. Because of this experience I will become a more effective teacher.

What Caused My Epiphany Moment...

On one of the first days of TCH 306 my professor, Dr. Seglem, asked the class "what does it mean to be literate?" The definition that I had was the ability to read and write. After a brief discussion, it turned out that the definition that I had written was similar to the definitions that most of my classmates had come up with. I think that the reason that we came up with a similar definition is because all throughout our education teachers' had taught us that literacy had to do with reading and writing. The homework for that night was to read about literacy across all content areas. While I was reading that article I could not believe what the article was stating. The article stated that the simple use of a calculator in math class is a form of literacy. In science literacy includes the ability to read and produce a graph, chart, etc. In social studies literacy is involved not only in the chapters that you have to read, but also in the movies or video clips that the teacher incorporates in to the lesson. This article has helped me open up my eyes and my belief of what being literate is. The term literate and literacy is a much broader term than most people think it is. In addition, because literacy is incorporated throughout all content areas we learned about the different strategies to help students activate their cognitive thought process, increase their comprehension levels, and to increase their retention. There are four different instructional strategies to support student learners, they include activating and connecting, monitoring and checking, consolidating and reconnecting, and lastly extending and connecting. The assignment that caused my "ah-ha" moment of how these strategies can be integrated in a teachers instruction was the case study. In the case study assignment, we had to choose a student that the teacher provided us with. Each student had sample work that was done in each of the four content areas. We then had to analyze the student work by determining their strengths and weaknesses and where the student can improve. Later on, we had to determine a literacy strategy that could help the student learn the information on the topic better and how it would enhance their learning in that area.
