The baby is sad/angry because it was killed wrongfully (maybe). The baby is symbolized as an an animal,in this case a snake due to the venom. they are referring to Beloved, who died without being fully freed. In the eyes of those who enslaved her and probably her mother, she was property, not human but an animal they own. Opening the book like this shows that Sethe still is stuck in the past, the guilt of killing her children will not let her move on. A part of her may also feel like she is nothing more than what her captives thought of her.

This quote shows how Sethe and Denver make it seem like the baby is the life of the house, which characterizes how much love Sethe had for her dead child. She loves her so much that she is okay with being haunted and refuses to leave.
