The baby is sad/angry because it was killed wrongfully (maybe). When beloved attacks the house right before dinner, Paul D expels the ghost out, yelling at it until it stopped shaking the house. this has stopped it for now.

Full of baby's venom" (page 1)
The baby is symbolized as an an animal,in this case a snake due to the venom. they are referring to Beloved, who died without being fully freed. In the eyes of those who enslaved her and probably her mother, she was property, not human but an animal they own. Opening the book like this shows that Sethe still is stuck in the past, the guilt of killing her children will not let her move on. A part of her may also feel like she is nothing more than what her captives thought of her.

"For a baby she throws a powerful spell," said Denver.
"No more powerful than the way I loved her," Sethe answered
(Morrison pg.5)
This quote shows how Sethe and Denver make it seem like the baby is the life of the house, which characterizes how much love Sethe had for her dead child. She loves her so much that she is okay with being haunted and refuses to leave. She is determined to be around her baby's ghost and feels like this is the only way she can be a good mother.

(Morrison pg.20)
This image shows how Sethe was assaulted, abused and had no choice but to run away after. running away after this shows her strength, she was strong enough to overcome the abuse for awhile to make sure her children were safe. but, she never really overcame the event and the fact that she recalls it still with so much emotion shows she is disturbed and broken by it.
