מעבר זה מסמל את ראשית תפקודו של הילד בחברה שמחוץ לבית. חברה זו מציבה בפני הילד ומשפחתו דרישות ברורות לגבי עמידה בכללים ובדרישות. הילד חווה גם שינוי בסטטוס שלו - המעבר ממעמד של בוגר בגן למעמד של צעיר בבית הספר. מעבר ממסגרת קטנה למסגרת גדולה, המונית וזרה.
המעבר עשוי לעורר שמחה וגם חששות - "מי יהיה בכיתה שלי?" "מה אם אני לא אשמע את הצילצול?" "אם אהיה רעב באמצע השיעור?" ועוד...
