There are many different cultures and they all have different beliefs, values, and attitude's onwards mental health, which can affect how individuals perceive symptoms, seek help, and respond to treatments/ medications. As well as this, language barriers and cultural misunderstandings between patients and health care professionals can affect effective communication and diagnosis.

In health and social care, cultural influences can significantly affect diagnosing mental health issues within a health and social care environment and this is because different cultures have various ways of expressing themselves, and this could be expressing ways of distress, understanding symptoms of their mental health disorder and seeking for medical help. Cultures have different ways of expressing themselves due to them all having different beliefs and values, so their coping mechanisms will all be completely different. For example, some cultures may describe any pain which is emotional through physical symptoms rather then speaking about their feelings, and this is because some cultures believe that seeking for help is a sign of weakness, and this prevents to individuals not openly discuss any struggles or difficulties that is leading them to late diagnoses. However, this can lead to misdiagnoses by health care professional because they are unfamiliar with those cultural expressions. therefore, health and social care professionals need cultural awareness and they need to ensue that they are respecting for cultural differences in order for them to accurate interpret symptoms and provide them with the correct care. Furthermore, this has links into the equality act 2010. the equality act 2010 is a low which protects individuals from discrimination based on their race, ethnicity, religion and their cultural backgrounds. this equality act fits well into cultural influences on diagnosing mental health issues because some the fact that some health care professionals misunderstand their cultural beliefs, so they may reject the patient or give them they wrong treatment, and this could lead to unnecessary treatments.

Cultural influences shape how people understand and accept different treatments within health and social care. for example, some cultures may prefer traditional healing methods or they may have belies that affect their willingness to take certain medications or even attend the doctors and therapy lessons. Due to this, this means that health and social care practitioner's need to adapt treatments to ensure that it fits that individuals cultural values and beliefs. As well as this, health and social care practitioners need to ensure that they are making the patient feel respected and understood at all time, as this is significantly important in order for the patient to receive the right treatment. A legislation which links into how cultural influences can affect treatment is the care act 2014. the care act 2014 promotes person centred care, encouraging services to tailor support based on that individuals cultural beliefs and backgrounds. this legislation has great links into this because health care professionals need to ensure that if a patient isn't happy about treatment that they are being offered they need to be open and honest about the situation and discuss their cultural beliefs, and health care professionals should work around this so that patients are receiving that care and feel much more comfortable and heard.

cultural influences affect support services in health and social care by shaping how individuals can access, use, and feel comfortable with those services which are in place. Different cultural backgrounds can affect communication styles, trust in professionals, and preferences for certain types of support. For example, some vultures value family, so they may have a lot more involvement to support them, where as others prefer to have that privacy and keep things to themselves. Support services within health and social care need to ensure that they are being fully flexible and culturally sensitive to meet those diverse needs of individuals, but they also need to ensure that all individuals feel support, safe and respected.
