So Melinda can't look at her self I believe it's because she disgusted with herself. On page 25 states "A cracked mirror tilts over a sink littered with dead roaches crocheted together with cobwebs. Later on in the book on page 50 she states " The first thing to go in the mirror. Even tho a mirror is cracked you are still able to see yourself it bothered her to even see the slights part of herself so she covers the mirror : text evidence "I cover it with a poster of Maya Angelou that the librarian gave me.
:

On page 80-82 Melinda was in biology class where they had to pin down a frog and dissect it. In the moment she started to feel like the frog .Pent down helpless and dead on the inside. This kinda brings a slight vivid horrible dark flashback that they really don't display in the novel.

The smell of the apple soaks the air and it reminds her of a time when she was younger. A time when her family was actually happy. On page 66 she talks about it and she says how her parents took her to an apple orchard and it has a happy time. The sun was out the bees were buzzing they were having a nice time together as a family. And that's something that doesn't happen anymore

Melinda had covered the mirror in the janitors closet with a poster of Maya Angelou (page 50). Maya Angelou was one of the symbols that could have been over looked. Melinda is also going threw some similar things that Maya has over came in life. Maya Angelou was a victim of rape and she remained silent for 5 years. Melinda has also been rapped and is silent because she is scared and doesn't know what to do so Maya is almost like someone for Melinda to look up to.
