Elizabeth Vigee Le Brun, Portrait of Marie Antoinette, 1783 Oil on Canvas

Artist Élizabeth Vigée Le Brun served as a portrait painter for Marie Antoinette. The themes of Rococo art can easily be seen in this painting. From the lacy parts of Marie Antoinette's dress and the overall ornateness of the piece, including her wig, headpiece, and flower, as a whole renders a well organized example of Rococo art. This piece replaced a previous painting that was deemed scandalous, also by Le Brun. A sense of power is woven into this portrait through the queen's elongated neck, stern yet relaxed gaze, and tall posture. The sense of power paired with ornate details illustrate a well depicted Rococo painting.

Francois Boucher, Venus Consoling Love, 1751, Oil on Canvas

Venus Consoling Love by Boucher depicts the goddess Venus taking away her son, Cupid's, arrows. Her soft, light, exposed skin hints at the sensuality of the Rococo period. The doves by Venus's feet and the blue drapery around her add to the light, fluffy nature of the piece. The use of the blues and greens paired with the light whites and cream colors illustrates the emphasis of color that was important throughout the Rococo period. A closer look at the painting shows the immense amount of detail in the sky, trees, and water under Venus's feet also illustrating the physicality of brushstrokes that was prevalent during the Rococo period.

Francois Boucher, Girl Reclining Louise O'Murphy, 1751, Oil on Canvas

Artist, Francois Boucher, enjoyed dabbling in sensual renderings of the sitter. The sitter also known as Marie-Louise O'Murphy, was a seamstress, but Boucher discovered her and she later became a model. Marie-Louise O'Murphy, after becoming a model she was a mistress of king Louis XV. The folds of the drapery that she is sitting on illustrates Rococo art by being very painterly and full. The way the throw, pillow, and the design on the couch show the light and detail-oriented way artists of the Rococo period painted. The sitter's scandalous history and the paintings detail-oriented, full nature depicts a well-rounded example of Rococo period art.

Jean-Honore Fragonard, The Swing, 1767, Oil on Canvas

The Swing by Fragonard is arguably one of the easily recognized Rococo period paintings. The ornate, detailed-focused trees and the girl's dress capture the playfulness of the Rococo period. The Swing was quite a controversial painting; at one point the work was described in comparison to "dreams of a madman" (Denis Diderot). A seemingly insignificant detail is one of the girl's shoe flying off. The flying off of the shoe was considered erotic and sensual. The easy and free nature of the painting, along with the light colors and erotic nature of the painting give the work an overall lighthearted and fun sense capturing the essence of Rococo period paintings and artwork.

Thomas Gainsborough, The Blue Boy, ca 1770, Oil on Canvas

The Blue Boy is considered one of Gainsborough's most famous pieces. The sitter is fascinating because of his elaborate clothing and sense of confidence illustrated through posture. The sitter's costume captures Rococo art characteristics through the pop of bright color and the detail of the folds seen on his top and pants. The history of this painting is fascinating as well. Many modern renditions of The Blue Boy have been created; namely a film entitled The Boy in Blue. The painting was sold in 1921 to an American for roughly 640,000 dollars, around 9 million dollars in today's money. The Rococo elements within this painting and rich, interesting history make this painting a timeless piece.

Francois Boucher, Madame Bergeret, 1766, Oil on Canvas

Madame Bergeret very easily embodies the Rococo period. The use of blues and cream colors along with the detail of the flowers and neck piece depict Rococo art as we know it now. The light, fluffiness of her dress paired with the tight bodice helps adds to the playfulness of the Rococo era. The youthfulness of the sitter along with the white hues from her hair, face and skin add to the playfulness of the painting. As many Rococo period paintings, Madame Bergeret is in a garden-like setting. This particular painting caught the eye of the king's mistress which causes Boucher to become more established.

Maurice-Quentin deLaTour, Portrait of the Marquise de Pompadour, 1748-1755, Pastels on Paper

Marquise de Pompadour was a mistress to king Louis XV. The flowy, ornate nature of the sitter's dress goes hand in hand with the Rococo period. The use of the creams and blues also highlight which time period the painting was created in. The setting of a drawing-type room with a globe and many other educational items gives light to the intelligence of the sitter. This particular image is interesting because it lacks playfulness that many Rococo artworks seem to embody. Overall, the work gives credit to many themes of the Rococo period with the coloring and ornateness visible throughout the painting.
