Sortskæg havde ikke noget arbejde så derfor fik han et job hos en sørøverkaptajn og efter kort tid blev Sortskæg også selv sørøverkaptajn. På et tidspunkt var sortskæg leder for 400 sørøvere. Men det varede ikke længe før en guvernør i 1718 besluttede sig for at gøre en ende på Sortskægs hær. Sortskæg ødelagde nemlig handelen for de almindelige skibe som sejlede langs kysten. Guvernøren sendte to krigskibe ud for at dræbe Sortskæg.
