Who was the man who sold the world?
There are differents versions:
  • Bowie talks about himself
  • He talks about youth and lack of self-esteem
  • It´s simply one of his surrealist stories

Personal Opinion
In my opinion when Bowie wrote the song he was talking about himself, about how he would see himself in a few years, that he would be proud of his work; this is what I understand of the phrase "We never lost control" because neither his present or his future lost control.
