Oil spills are exactly what they sound like, spilling of oil in the ocean. Mostly caused by busted pipes off-shore, oil covers the surface of the water an a layer of oil that blocks light from getting down into the water. It can also kill fish that go into it given the consistency of thick and sticky. On top of this any birds that fly to low can get caught up and drown as the oil covers their wings.

By using free-standing rigs you pump gasses, usually toxic for the environment, down into the rock at the bottom of the ocean. The oil is buried within the rock under tons of pressure, so if you give it a hole to escape through and a push with the gas you can get a LOT of oil. The gasses used are dangerous as they could result in an explosion or leak regardless of what could go wrong with the oil.

Because oil is non-soluble in water, it ends up just sitting on the surface or attached to land formations like reefs in the ocean causing habitat disruption and major damage to the homes of the species in the reefs as well as they previously stated effects of oil on the surface (first box).

The long term impacts of oil spills on humans are limited and non significant but short term can be rather unpleasant. Oil can cause severe skin and eyes agitation if someone came in contact with it. The people who come into contact during containment/cleanup are most at risk for these effects.

In 2010, easily the worst oil spill in world history was the Deep Water Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico. This resulted from a suspected methane build up the resulted in a pipe eruption along the ocean floor. It spilled for 87 days releasing 3.19 million gallons into the ocean. It killed 11 people and 1300 fish, 220 birds, and 3000 crustaceans. This does not include the thousands of various species both marine and on land that were negatively impacted through habitat removal and adverse health effects varied by organism.

The three ways we clean up oil spills in the ocean are dispersion, burning, and skimming. Dispersion is when you put chemicals into the water/oil that break the oil apart making it easier for the environment to remove the oil. Burning is when you use up all the oil as fuel for a gigantic fire out on the ocean. Skimming is when boats go along with nets that can catch the oil thus it can be collected and transported away.
