Sara Fortis was born in Chalkis Greece, to the name of Sarika Yehoshua in 1927. She never knew her father who passed when she was only two months old. The Nazi's invaded in 1941 and when her and her mother heard about Jews being deported they decided to escape to the small village of Kuturla. Eventually it was no longer safe and the people of the village told her she needed to find a new place to hide. Sara was told that they would continue to protect her mother if she left. When she was forced to leave her mother she decided to become an andarte.

After becoming a resistance fighter she wanted to play a bigger role so she decided to go to other villages to recruit women that wanted to fight. Not longer after Sara's squad became irreplaceable, but even so there was many doubts concerning the teams safety. They were often forced to sleep next to the men and Sara constantly worried for their safety. On their first mission, the group was ordered to throw cocktails to distract the enemy while the partisans attacked. The male partisans were so impressed they invited the female squad to joint them for future missions.

Once, Sara's squad received orders to burn down an enemy house in a village. They were responsible for torching the house and were given the means to do so. Rather than going in their partisan outfits, the girls were given villager outfits. One girl took the right of the house, one the left, and were given a place to meet after the act was done. No one guessed that women could do that, and that was the squads greatness. The partisans were blamed the next day but Sara and her girls were satisfied with what they did. That as women, they could fight along partisans and make a difference.

Without Sara's act as a partisan, many Jews would've suffered the same fate as those in the concentration camps. Not only them but there was also many gentiles and Greeks who were captured by the Nazi's with the Jews. The Nazi's captured Greeks, Jews, those who helped and those who resisted. This made is a very grave matter for the women to be rebelling. Sara, along with other partisans, made it possible for all of these people to have the best training they possibly could've had in preparation for fighting alongside the US and against the Nazi's in WWII. With the help from Sara, her group became one of the most, if not the most, fierce women partisan groups in the war. Sara gave the girls in her squad a voice and forced men to give the respect the women deserved.

Although the women were one of the most fierce Partisan groups, they weren't given the respect they needed due to sexism. During the war many did not believe women were capable of doing the things Sara's squad did so many male partisans were given credit for what Sara's group has done. Due to this, not many earned the respect they deserved for their acts. Along with this, many of the girls in Sara"s squad had no problem letting a man speak rudely or do something to them. Sara felt the responsibility to teach the girls and protects them from the men. Because Sara's squad traveled with the men, they slept in the same quarters with the men. Sara felt very dirty about this and felt the need to protect the girls from any harm at night.

At first the Partisans would tell me what they required and I taught them (the girls). We weren't given heavy arms, just pistols. Every day I was taught something new and then I taught it to them. My approach was different. At the beginning they would giggle, 'ooh, will we hold that!' You should have seen them after a month went by. It was like they were completely different girls. They took it more seriously than I did. Let's do this, let's help, let's ask about what needs doing. At first our job was to train. Afterwards it was to learn how to be girls alongside the men. It was difficult teaching them to behave as equals among them. We learned to use pistols. We did whatever the Partisans asked us to. The Partisans saw that we were successful in performing our tasks.”

By 18 she was known as Kapetennisa (captain) Sarika. There were many futile attempts to capture Sara, as she made a large impact on the community. During one futile attempt, the Nazis sent an informer to capture her who mistakenly took her cousin, Medi. They then brutally raped, assaulted, and murdered her. Sara, vowing for revenge, tracked down then executed the informer.
