Community & Exclusivity - What Is It?

In music, some music can be associated with certain cultures, and certain groups. You may be hearing a certain genre of music for the first time, and feel excluded at first. With latin music, for example. Most of it is in Spanish, so for some, it may be hard to understand, except for those who speak Spanish. As Ratliff says, "Essentially, you are a child waiting for a stranger to have pity on you and explain the map."

Vincente Fernandez - Volver Volver

With this example, Ratliff explains how community is displayed through songs. With Vincente Fernandez's popular song Volver Volver, he explains how his yelped grito is a rallying cry for unity among Mexicans. "Soon he delivers a fantastic yelped grito, the cry of Mexican independence that became the stamp of ranchera: I love my people, I love my song, I'm prepared to die for either- and you?" Vincente Fernandez was an extremely popular artist in Mexico, so his music allowed the unity of Mexican communities. They could all relate to it, they could all get behind it.

Shakira - Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)

In this song, which was written for and was labeled the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Shakira sings about the unity of all of Africa. The 2010 FIFA World Cup was held in South Africa, and in the song, Shakira sings of working toward goals like a soldier on the battlefield. The song also features South African band Freshlyground, which helped the song become more inclusive and have a stronger sense of community when calling for the unity of Africa. In the last few seconds of the song, Shakira can be heard saying "We are all Africa, we are all Africa."

Personally , I agree with this concept, as I've felt it firsthand. Growing up, it was very common for people to play Tejano music and Cumbias at family gatherings, such as birthdays, quinceneras, and weddings. Whenever I was with my friends, and I played a popular Cumbia song, they knew it instantly, because we all grew up around the same culture. This gave us a sense of community, and allowed us to relate to one another. This concept can be applied to different genders, different races, and different minority groups. They can all feel a sense of community and inclusion in music.
