Today’s news is all about the Alamo. The battle of the Alamo lasted from February 23-March 6,1836. This event was a major part in not only Texas history but also American history. Mexican troops were under the order of President General Antonio López de Santa Anna. He launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar, killing the Texan Deffenders. What Santa Anna had done and all his cruelty had actually inspired some Texans. They had Texas settlers and adventures from the United States. They joined the Texan army. While there were only 100 men and no more than that they were determined to get revenge. They were furious on what Santa Anna had done. On April 21,1836 the Texans defeated the Mexican Army, ending the Revolution.

The Alamo was originally called Mission San Antonio de Valero.
It was built as a fortress style compound and mission.
It's believed the name the Alamo came to be due to the Second Flying Company of San Carlos when they took over the abandoned mission.
In 1835 the general of the Mexican soldiers surrendered the mission to the Texan Army.
In 1836, Mexican soldiers attacked the Alamo and most of the soldiers of the Texan Army were killed. The Mexican soldiers stayed for a while, but eventually left Texas.
After the Texas Revolution which ended in 1848, the Mexicans retreated. Before they left they destroyed many of the walls and buildings of the Alamo.
The buildings that survived were used as housing for soldiers until it was abandoned in 1876.
The state of Texas purchased the Alamo chapel but did not restore it.
It was then sold and used as a whole sale grocery store.
A group that called themselves the Daughters of the Republic of Texas convinced the government to buy the Alamo in 1905 so it could be restored.
After a court battle over who would oversee the restoration, the state took control and restoration began in 1912.
Later in 1912 the site was given back to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and has remained in their custody ever since.
At one time there were as many as 30 adobe buildings in the Mission San Antonio de Valero (later the Alamo) complex.
The mission was built strong enough to help defend against Comanche and Apache natives.

From October 1835, Texans in the field had succeeded in most of their military campaigns. The cannon at Gonzales remained, smaller military units surrendered and then retired to Mexico, and Bexar finally gave way after a two-month siege. When Martin Perfecto de Cos and his men retreated from Bexar in December 1835, Texas had eliminated the last of the Mexican garrisons. Most of the volunteers returned to their homes, convinced the war was over. The provisional government, split by internal quarrels over the objectives of the war, failed to supply the men in the field adequately. What little remained of the munitions and supplies were further subject to confiscation by commanders proposing buccaneering expeditions to Matamoros.By January, the small body of men commanded by James C. Neill were reduced to about 100. They were supplemented by some twenty-five volunteers commanded by James Bowie. William Barrett Travis arrived on February 3 with thirty men from the regular army, ordered there by Governor Henry Smith. In spite of engineer Green B. Jameson's belief that the Alamo was indefensible, both Neill and Bowie saw the fortress as a strategic post, particularly because of its armament. Houston, on the other hand, preferred to avoid fixed fortifications, and ordered Bowie, subject to Henry Smith's approval, to blow up the building.

On the morning of March 6, the Mexican troops were stationed at 4 o'clock, A.M., in accord with Santa Anna's instructions. The artillery, as appears from these same instructions, was to remain inactive, as it received no order; and furthermore, darkness and the disposition made of the troops which were to attack the four fronts at the same time, prevented its firing without mowing down our own ranks. Thus the enemy was not to suffer from our artillery during the attack. Their own artillery was in readiness. At the sound of the bugle they could no longer doubt that the time had come for them to conquer or to die. Had they still doubted, the imprudent shouts for Santa Anna given by our columns of attack must have opened their eyes.As soon as our troops were in sight, a shower of grape and musket balls was poured upon them from the fort, the garrison of which at the sound of the bugle, had rushed to arms and to their posts. The three columns that attacked the west, the north, and the east fronts, fell back, or rather, wavered at the first discharge from the enemy, but the example and the efforts of the officers soon caused them to return to the attack. The columns of the western and eastern attacks, meeting with some difficulties in reaching the tops of the small houses which formed the walls of the fort, did, by a simultaneous movement to the right and to left, swing northward till the three columns formed one dense mass, which under the guidance of their officers, endeavored to climb the parapet on that side.

General Santa Anna and his troops arrived on February 23, 1836. They laid siege to the fort for 13 days. On the morning of March 6, the Mexicans launched a major attack. The Texans managed to fend off the first few attacks, but there were too many Mexican soldiers and they managed to scale the walls and get inside the fort. The fighting was fierce, but eventually the Mexicans won. They killed every soldier in the fort. Although the Texans lost the battle, it galvanized the rest of Texas against Mexico and General Santa Anna. A few months later, Sam Houston led the Texans to victory over Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texans rallied to the cry of "Remember the Alamo!" during the battle.

In 1821, the country of Mexico won its independence from Spain. At the time, Texas was part of Mexico and Mexico had a government similar to the United States. Many Americans moved to Texas and became Mexican citizens. In 1832, a powerful Mexican general named Santa Anna took control of the government. The Texans (called "Texians" at the time) didn't like the new ruler. They rebelled and declared their independence on March 2, 1836. Santa Anna gathered an army to march on Texas and take it back. General Santa Anna
Author: Craig H. Roell

The Mexican forces were led by General Santa Anna.
