This class really emphasized how important it is to make positive family contact — especially with our multilingual students. I didn’t realize what the culture is around teachers for Latin American families and once I started trying to navigate my relationships with my Latino families in that way, I saw a huge shift in my students’ performance in class as well.

Working together with my co-teacher through planning, teaching, and reflecting has opened up the conversation of co-teaching in our building. She was not aware of the sheltered instruction strategies and how well they work for all students. She has been able to reflect on how teaching together has been a positive experience for her. Even though she was willing to help me she was wary. together has had a positive effect

As a Librarian, getting to hear from Emily about the stories she had written based on her experiences with her students was so cool! On a deeper level, I learned the value of my story and those around me. I am such a believer in the power of writing and it has transformed the way that I teach. Going forward I am looking into ways to get my students’ writing published and show them that their words and point of view matter. Personally, I would love write my own story now that I understand how therapeutic it can be.
