The intolerable acts were a series of disciplinary laws enacted by the British government is response to the events of the Boston Tea Party. Defiance in the colonies had been prevalent for some time, and the British were trying to abolish the stubbornness in the colonies. Parliament attempted to assert it's political authority more in America. Boston was the center of attention, as it was one of the most hostile colonies in America. Changes to Boston run rampant. The Boston Harbor Port Bill was signed, shutting down the harbor and restitution had to be paid. An elective council was replaced with an appointed representative in the Massachusetts Government Act. Massachusetts used to be a crown colony, but now lost that privilege. British officials were protected from being charged with capital offense and were allowed to have trial in England. this was known as the Administration of Justice Act. Americans also had to house British troops in their own dwellings, known as the quartering act.

General Thomas Gage was tasked by the King to seize all weapons and other arms from the colonists of Boston Massachusetts. This was due to disobedience and constant backlash from the colonists. When peaceful negotiations amongst the colonists and British fell through, an all out battle broke out that caused many deaths and injuries to both parties. The colonists drove the British back to retreat, but the casualties proved as a harsh consequence. The Olive Branch petition attempted to settle the feud between England and the impatient colonies. The petition came into effect after votes by all the colonies. The King neglected the petition and could not forgive the colonies for the many terrible, oppressive acts they committed. War would soon begin.

"By the King, A Proclamation, For Suppressing Rebellion and Sedition"; Papers of the Continental Congress- 1774-1789, Item 152, Letters from Gen.
