I'm Tawana Burke, Director of First Year Experience. I'm excited to start my 22nd year at LSC and my 6th year teaching the EDUC 1300 course. I also taught the course years ago when it was HUMD 0330. As we dive into another semester, I want to give a warm welcome and shout-out to everyone! Your passion, dedication, and expertise are so important in shaping the future of our first-year students.

I'm excited about using the new course shell and look forward to the excitement and energy that new students always bring. Justin Chevalier, here. I am excited for the upcoming 2024 fall semester. Each semester, I enjoy my time engaging with the individuals in my EDUC 1300 course where we dive deep into learning about ourselves, develop skills to reach our full potential, and celebrate our individual paths on the journey of life.

I recall taking my first course at Lone Star College in the summer of 2009 – a memorable moment in time. Having worked at Lone Star College since 2014, I am grateful for the opportunity to create memorable moments for the students enrolled in my EDUC 1300 courses.

I look forward to building my skills in this certification to facilitate a more robust online EDUC 1300 course and learning from other faculty about their practices to keep students engaged and making forward progress on their educational journey.

My name is Dr. David Pyle and this is my 33rd year in Education teaching both Secondary and Higher Education. I am the Chair of Education and Lead Faculty AAT. This summer, I became Faculty Fellow in the Faculty Qualities of Excellence in The Center for the Advancement of Teaching & Learning.

When I attended Lone Star-North Harris (back in the day), this course was NOT around! How I wish I had the tools when I entered college. This is a GREAT course and each of you are the very first-faces students will see. Your committee worked very hard to put all of the pieces together

I am Donna Willingham, and the picture is of my sidekick, Molly. She is a 3-year-old Boston Terrier, and we go and do everything together. :)

I have been teaching EDUC 1300 for 3 years. I now teach an Internationalized version and will teach an Honors section this fall. I love the course and I love teaching it.

I am looking forward to teaching the Honors section and I am a little worried about...nothing. I am pretty flexible and can adjust on the fly. I have 30 years teaching experience and if given a topic, I can readily teach on the spot. LOL!

I'm Leela Bhuyan-Duncan. I have taught both online and in the classroom off and on for over 30 years. This is a photo of a hiking trip to Big Bend I took with my kids (highly recommend!).

My name is Beth Gotcher. I have been a teacher for 32 years. I teach middle school special education as my full-time job. This is my 10th year as an adjunct at LSC teaching EDUC 1300. I am excited and nervous about changes to the course, gradebook, etc. I'm looking forward to learning about and getting to know my students. I love helping them be successful.

I have been at LSC-CyFair since 2011 and have served as full time faculty here since 2014. Before LSC, I worked at Texas A&M in housing and a first year learning community program. I love working with first year students. I always look forward to what they will teach me in the coming year.

I am looking forward to getting to know my students this fall and I'm excited about the new OER textbook.

I'm a little nervous about possible election tension on campus. I was still teaching fully online during the 2020 election and things are even more divisive now so I wonder how that may play out on our campuses. I am confident that we can all facilitate conversations professionally, as appropriate, and lead by example during this time.

One thing that I look forward to in teaching EDUC 1300 is ensuring that my students gain the best learning experiences from this course, which they can apply throughout their academic journey. One thing that I am unsure about is the aspects that are considered less useful by the students in this class (based on previous course evaluations). I hope that the recent review of the course has addressed these concerns.

My name is Elvis Parada; I been teaching adjunct for EDUC 1300 for about 12 years :-) and have been in Higher Education for 15 years. Every term I look forward to connecting with new incoming students and providing them the resources to be successful as they embark in their college journey. One thing that makes me nervous and unsure is the textbook set-up for our students, the online only option for some of our student demographic can potentially become a barrier to them early on in their journey. I hope these hiccups have been addressed before the start of the fall term.

My name is Edna Robinson and I am excited to begin my sixth year teaching EDUC 1300 at Lone Star College, Houston North. It is always exciting to work with the first semester students. As with many of you I absolutely love teaching this course. The opportunity to assist students who are embarking on this new chapter of their lives and providing them with the tools (which I wish I had - lol) to be successfully is always fulfilling.

I am Connie Thornell. I retired after teaching for 36 years and love being able to still teach through LSC. I look forward to the new course and I'm so excited students get the textbook free. The one thing I always look forward to is meeting my new students. The fresh perspectives that each brings to our classrooms make each session a wonderful new learning experience for me and them. I love the mission of helping them to adjust to the college setting. It is a class that would have greatly benefitted me if it were available when I was a college freshman. I have the first semester GPA to prove that assertion.

My uncertainty is the new textbook. I need to spend some time with it to see how it will fit into the curriculum. I am pleased that it is included with the tuition costs and not an optional add-on.

My name is Jo Nell Yarbrough and I am beginning my sixth year at LSC teaching EDUC 1300. I spent 30 years in public education and after retirement I taught English and served as the Resource Specialist at Springfield College. I enjoy each new semester as I love seeing the students grow and mature in their thinking and actions. We cover many subjects that beginning students need, and they feel much stronger, more comfortable, enthusiastic, and ready for college life and responsibilities ahead.

I am a little nervous about the changes we will experience this term, but I''ll just have to become familiar with the material like I did at first, so I can do my best for students. I'm looking forward to a successful year!

I look forward to teaching this course again because of the excitement of watching the students learn and develop over the course of 8 weeks. I also watched them forge new friendships and gain confidence. It’s exciting! However, I am still nervous. I am new at this! I ultimately want my students to be engaged and feel comfortable and know their contribution is critical for everyone’s success. It went so well last year and I am looking forward to it again!

I always look forward to meeting the students. Watching them grow and learn is just a thrill for me. Making connections is so key in learning and that is what I hope to make with them. Sharing my experiences, strengths, hopes, and dreams.

I am nervous about the changes to the shell. Converting over instructions and content that I need for the new course is going to be a bit difficult and time consuming. That is hard as an adjunct with another job. I am not the most technologically knowledgable person. Even with the new items, the instructions and formats are now of someone else’s voice. I am being proactive by meeting with an Instructional Design team member and invited all the other instructors from our Center.

My name is Ramona Lusby-Buffington. I have taught 15 years as an adjunct and 29 years as a middle school teacher in public education. This will be my third-year teaching EDUC 1300. One thing that I look forward to is meeting new students. I am not nervous about anything, but I am excited that all students will have access to course materials online.

This year, I am planning to use community circles with temperature checks to form word clouds. Hopefully, the word clouds will help them to remove some stress as they progress through the course. I am stressed about the lack of writing skills that some of my students might exhibit. Hopefully, using the MLA format will help to correct this problem. I am looking forward to a successful year!

My name is Jana Lopez and this is my 2nd year teaching EDU1300. I absolutely love it! It gives me a break from the elementary world as an Assistant Principal and allows me to work with older students as they pursue their future endeavors. I am not nervous about anything but am definitely excited to meet a new group of students.

Great to be here with you! I'm Valerie New and am looking forward to our fall semester together. My new grandson was born this past week in Denver where my son lives. My daughter will also be having a grandson in the next week so Camp GiGi is officially open. Lol!

It's been an honor teaching 30 plus years in education with the last 11 years at Lone Star since 2013. Previously I taught in Humble ISD for 20 years. One of the parts of teaching I enjoy & love the most is meeting our new students each semester. We are given a unique opportunity each semester with teaching our course and curriculum to make a big difference for incoming students. Can't think of anything better than helping students be successful in college, their future careers and lives. Watching them gain confidence in themselves throughout the semester while seeing how far they have come from the beginning to the end is special.

This is my 2nd semester teaching EDUC 1300 so I am still new to this! I am excited to meet this new group and help them in their first year of college. I am nervous about the new shell and textbook, as it all still feels new to me. But I am excited to get back into the classroom and help students reach their goals!

I always look forward to the students who will be in my classroom and the creative flair they bring.

One thing that has me a bit unsettled is my return. I feel as though there is a lot I have missed out on since the pandemic and I don't want to feel "left behind" when it comes to creating a dynamic learning environment.

But guess what? I'm still ready!

      I have been Instructing EDUC students for 9 years. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work at various campuses, beginning my career at Greenspoint Center, transitioning to Victory Center, and North Harris, and am currently at Kingwood.

     I always look forward to engaging with new students in all our course activities. I find that each semester I learn as much from them as I hope to teach them.

    I am always nervous about tech. I am sloooowly evolving with speed of technology. It seems like just when I catch up to what is current, something new comes along. Thank goodness for the Lone Star IT Team, Instructional Designers, Etc.! They are amazing!!!

I look forward to connecting with faculty and staff at Cypress Center and other campuses. I believe 2024-24 will be an even greater academic year.

As we go into this next academic year, it will be my ninth with Lone Star College. After many (long) years in K12, I started teaching 1300 at North Harris in 2015 and, in order to be closer to home, transferred to UP in 2016. I'll always be so, so thankful to Dr. Crystal Allan and, of course, Mike for the opportunity to do my dream job. Guiding students through their first year of college and helping them build a strong collegiate foundation makes EDUC 1300 such an incredible course to teach. This is a gift!

Like Mike said, we have a lot of "new" this semester, so I look forward to seeing you all in August!

My name is David Putz and I am a member of the Political Science faculty at Kingwood, and this fall marks my 22nd (or maybe 23rd?) year teaching at the college. After almost a ten year absence from the EDUC 1300 classroom, this will be my third time to teach the course.

I'm excited to teach this course because it gives me the opportunity to get away from a content heavy course like political science and get creative in the way I interact with students and offer course material. I am also excited about working with some of our newest students at the start of their academic journey and offering them ways to reach their academic goals. My only concern is, since I haven't taught EDUC 1300 in several years, is learning and adjusting to any changes that have happened over that time.

My name is Robert McAndrews. I have been an adjunct instructor since 1990 when I taught Intro to Computers at the North Harris Campus when the system was still called North Harris Montgomery Community College District (NHMCCD) I was teaching here when the name changed to Lone Star. I moved over to Kingwood College 1994 and have taught a variety of credit and credit and CE courses. I recently retired from the Humble ISD after 40+ years. I am currently a substitute teacher and will continue part time at Lone Star. I have taught EDUC for many years now and I enjoy working with first year students. What I enjoy most is when students thank me at the end of the semester because they truly feel that the information provided to them in this course will actually help them as they continue in their educational journey. I wish each of you a very successful and fulfilling semester.

My name is Thomas (TJ) Clegg and this is my 2nd year teaching EDUC 1300. I have previously taught EDUC 1301 and 2301 at a different campus. I teach full time for Cy-Fair ISD and am entering my 18th year of teaching. I am looking forward to teaching an 8 week mini for the 1st time and am worried about student success in a fast paced course. I want them to be successful, but don't want them to think an 8 week course means it is less work.

I am embracing the new platform and materials in a positive aspect. I appreciate the support system at Montgomery LSC Campus and feel fortunate to be a part this team.

My name is Kenzalia Bryant-Scott and I have been an adjunct for LSC HN for 2 years. I have been working in higher education for 10 years. I look forward to engaging with my students and seeing the lightbulbs go off when they learn something new. Although I'm not nervous about the diversity of students I will have in my class, I am always conscience to ensure I have activities for the variety of life experiences I will have in my class. I love the challenge.

What I always most look forward to in a semester is working with our students and in empowering our faculty to create a meaningful, compassionate, and transformative first year experience for our students. So much rides on our success here - the future of our individual students' lives, the future of their communities and nations. We must give ourselves and them a bit of grace when there are the inevitable setbacks.

This year what concerns me most is both our commitment and our ability to creating safe, productive spaces for students to explore the great upheavals occurring across all sectors, including - significantly - tech in the form of AI.

One thing I look forward to in teaching EDUC 1300 is the opportunity to help freshmen students transition into college equipped with the necessary tools to achieve their long term goals.

However, I am unsure of how to successfully incorporate this new AI platform into our learning. But, I look forward to the challenge!

My name is Darren Goemmer and I teach at Blanson CTE, as the Dyslexia Specialist. I am starting my twenty-fourth year in education and this is my third semester teaching the EDUC 1300 course. I look forward to interacting with the students here at Blanson and helping them obtain their level-one certification. One thing that concerns me is getting the students to complete the advising component of the course.

I am starting my 13th year in education. As an EDUC 1300 professor, I enjoy working with students as they dive deeper into their future goals. Since I teach the late start courses, I am a little nervous if all my classes will make.

My name is Miguel Burke and I have been teaching EDUC 1300 since 2011 when it was HUM-D. I started as an adjunct at various locations at LSC and eventually joined the awesome Cy-Fair Faculty family (Shout out to Kim, Val, Steph, Ericka, Shamim, Carrie, and Bethany!) I'm not really nervous about teaching anything because this is the best class in the world to teach! I'm fashionably late to the party because I am still trying to finish my Summer II session. On that note, I want to send positive vibes out to everyone. May you have the best semester ever!

One thing I am looking forward to in teaching EDUC 1300 is working with another group of diverse and creative students. I love learning about their career interest and academic and personal goals. I am nervous about the new AI concerns and how that might play a role in the classroom setting.

I have been teaching for 2 years now! Time flies! One thing I look forward to teaching in this course is the importance of having a growth mindset.

-I taught EDUC for the first time last fall. I absolutely loved it and continued to teach it in the spring and summer.

One thing that you look forward to in teaching EDUC 1300.

-I look forward to teaching critical thinking/thinking in college. We talk a lot about transitioning out of a high school mindset and learning to ask/research deeper questions. I usually end the unit with a conspiracy theory project where they must look for valid sources to either side with or against the conspiracy theory they are researching. It teaches them to research a topic deeply instead of just accepting information that is given to them.

One thing that you are nervous/unsure about in teaching EDUC 1300.

-Financial Literacy always makes me nervous. The assignments are great, however I want to build on the budgeting portion of the topic. I plan to create a project of things the students can use immediately while they're in college.

As an instructor of EDUC 1300, I look forward to interacting with the numerous, unique personalities of my students. Invariably, we wind up teaching each other a great many things.

I don't have too many concerns about teaching the course. Technology glitches and misunderstandings are always an issue, but that's nothing new.

My name is Kimberly Anderson. I have worked as the Nursing Program Coordinator at CyFair for 13 years. This will be my first time teaching a pilot course for students interested in nursing. I look forward to teaching the students and helping them to navigate their way. I am nervous about formally teaching in a classroom setting but I am excited.

My name is Jamesia King. This year will be my 6th year teaching EDUC in the fall semester. I really enjoy being a part of the Lone Star College community. EDUC is such an impactful course and I look forward to teaching and connecting with first-year students. I can not say that I am nervous or unsure about teaching EDUC this year. I look forward to meeting each student, connecting them to resources on campus, and being a apart of their collegiate journey.

My name is Di Nardo "Dee" Bazile and I've been teaching EDUC 1300 for 3 years now. I mainly teach in the Fall semester, but very excited to continue the work of connecting with first year students. I look forward to bringing my authentic teaching style to this course. One thing I'm slightly nervous about is how my students will gravitate to online learning modalities.

My name is Avis Jenkins. This year will be my 5th year teaching EDUC 1300. I am so excited to meet the new students, and share with them the learning experience we will have together. I am a little nervous about getting to know each one of them, only due to the size of the classes.

I have been in public High School Early College for 2 years. I am a lifelong learner.

I am excited to learn how to incorporate AI into the course to teach students how to use it as a tool, instead of as a substitute for thinking. However, I am also a little unsure about this!

The one thing I look forward to every year is learning from the students. They teach me just as much as I teach them. They keep me young at heart.

The one thing I am nervous about is getting students to understand Ai is a tool and not a substitute for learning material. Students will not have Ai for entrance exams.

But overall, I am ready for the new year and what it has to offer for the students and myself.

I am slightly unsure about how to best adapt my teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students who may have different learning styles and backgrounds.

I am a full time dual credit advisor for Lone Star Houston North and teach EDUC1300 as an Adjuct. This is my first semester to teach this course online so I look forward to the journey and learning along side my students.

I have been in higher education for twenty years, of which the past ten years have been working in LSC Kingwood.

I look forward to mutual learning between my students and I. I do not feel nervous or unsure about teaching Educ 1300.
