The USA is known as THE nation of immigrants and nearly every president of the United States underlined the fact that the majority of American citizens once were immigrants themselves. Be it John F. Kennedy in 1958 who stated that immigrants "have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life" or the first Afro-American president Barack Obama in 2014 who stressed: "We are and always will be a nation of immigrants".

However, in contrast to the politicians from the past, the newest president of the USA, who also has immigrants as ancestors, is strongly against immigration, especially from Mexico and Middle Eastern countries. That is why he wants to "build a great, great wall on our southern border" and even states "Mexico will pay for that wall" (Trump, 2015). A lot of people like to believe that Trump`s antipathy against immigrants is an exception but actually many U.S. Americans share his opinion. Yet the image of the USA as a nation of immigrants still exists. So is that image still appriopriate?

The question is if this picture of the US as an immigrant nation will continue to live on if people like Trump will stay in high positions and keep on trying to stop immigration from certain countries and making life for immigrants in the USA harder. The thing ist: That would not help the country`s progress because immigrants bring new ideas and qualities! So if the USA completely isolated itself from the world, the country would be stuck and would not have the developments it could have if they let immigrants in.

So why are so many Americans against immigration? A statistic from the Pew Research Center shows that 41% of the Americans said that they were a burden because they took jobs, housing and health care.
That means they are afraid that the immigrants will take things away from them. But in reality many of the immigrants don't even get Green Cards anymore and live under very bad conditions and even if they are legally in the USA they have the job they deserve because of their qualities.
This means that if Americans are unhappy that an immigrant got their job then that is possibly because they have better qualities and that is in no way connected to their immigrant status. So instead of being against immigrants because they "take their job" everyone should work on their own qualities and experience to achiev what they want.

All in all, every American should remember that the U.S.- as we know it today- was formed and made diverse by immigrants. So instead of blaming the immigrants everyone should help them to integrate and fight prejudices. Otherwise America will no longer be a nation of immigrants and the "American Dream" will die.
