<title>The British Isles are made up of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland and Wales. England, Scotland and Wales are part of the Great Britain Island. The Great Britain Island and Northern Island compose the United Kingdom or Britain. The capital of England is the global city of London. One of the most popular places there is the Palace of Westminster, also known as the Houses of Parliament, where the government meet. It includes the House of Commons and the House of Lords. It is located on the left bank of the River Thames. A traditional dish in London is fish and chips with garden peas. The Canterbury Tales is one of the greatest poetic works in English. They are a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer. Chaucer also contributed importantly in the second half of the 14th century to the management of public affairs as courtier, diplomat, and civil servant. Scotland covers the northern third of the Island of Great Britain. Its capital city is Edinburgh. The typical Scottish clothes are tartan or kilt. It is a historic piece of clothing originated in the Highlands around 1500 A.C. A &#39;proper&#39; kilt is usually accompanied by a sporran (purse) which is a small bag worn around the waist, over the kilt, a kilt pin and holds the two pieces together at the front and a Sgian dubh (a small dagger which sits in the sock). The bagpipe is the national instrument of Scotland and is best represented in the music of the Scottish Highlands. Scotland is a land of myths and legends. The Loch Ness monster is one of them. The creature is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. ‘Nessie’ has a long neck and one or more humps protruding from the water. The first recorded sighting of the monster was nearly 1,500 years ago when a giant beast is said to have leaped out of a lake near Inverness and eaten a local farmer. Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic and its capital city is Dublin. It is politically divided in Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland (part of the UK). Saint Patrick is the patron saint and the national apostle credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland. The feast of Saint Patrick is held on March 17th when he died. A lot of legends grew up around him, for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts. The shamrock is the national flower and was chosen by Saint Patrick as a symbol of the Trinity of the Christian church because of its three leaflets bound by a common stalk. Wales is a westward extension of the island of Great Britain and its capital city is Cardiff. The Welsh flag incorporates the red dragon, a popular symbol along with the Tudor colours of green and white. The leek is the national emblem of Wales. According to legend the patron saint of Wales, Saint David, ordered his Welsh soldiers to identify themselves by wearing the leek on their helmets in an ancient battle against the Saxons that took place in a leek field. It is still worn on St David&#39;s Day each March 1st. The daffodil is the national flower of Wales, and is worn on St David&#39;s Day each March 1st. The flower appears in early spring, around the time of St David&#39;s Day. Lloyd George wore the daffodil on this day and encouraged its use at the investiture of the Prince of Wales in 1911. </title>
