A Bad Case of Stripes is a fiction and fantasy book. This book can teach a student a lot through the fiction aspect, but makes it interesting and unrealistic in the fantasy aspect. No one is going to magically wake up with stripes all over them, but it makes the children happy and enter their imagination while reading. The students can fill out this sheet to separate the fiction and fantasy parts of the book.

Camilla Cream is a normal student who is excited yet anxious for the first day of school. The night before she tried on 42 outfit because she needed to perfect outfit. Camilla has insecurities about fitting in with everyone else at her school, which is why this outfit is very important. Camilla is not only basing her outfits off what her peers think, but also what she eats. Everyone in the school hates lima beans, but that is Camilla's favorite food. She pretends that she hates it to fit in. One morning she wakes up covered in stripes. Camilla goes to school on the second day and when she gets home she is so embarrassed because everyone laughed at her. Overall, Camilla is trying to shape herself to please others. I will have my students fill out this chart with evidence from the book to characterize Camilla Cream from their perspective.

Throughout this story, Camilla was trying to fit in with her peers. One morning she woke up with stripes all over her. Every time someone said anything, it changed her stripes. Eventually Camilla had a tail, fungus, polka dots and much more on her. One day, she even changed into her bedroom. This old lady came by and told her "You have the worst case of the stripes I've ever seen." She tried to feed her lima beans, but Camilla said she did not like them. Finally, Camilla realized her case of the stripes was worse than admitting she loved lima beans. As soon as she ate them she turned back to normal. Camilla got the stripes because she was not being true to herself. After she returned back to normal, she stop caring what everyone thought and began always acting herself.

At the end of this book and discovering the literary elements and theme, I will have my students complete a mini project. I would love for them to confess one thing they do not do because of their peers and dress up as a form of Camilla Cream when she had a bad case of the stripes. They will write what they stopped doing/eat and why and why they should continue it again. I think this would be fun and interactive!
