During their stays in Jerusalem Marco Polo and Francis and Denis both obtained holy oil from the holy sepulcher which is a religious site. They collected it on the eastern orthodox Easter Sunday.

Francis and Denis took there trip a lot later which meant that the Taliban had taken over and you couldn't walk anywhere on the streets without soldiers surrounding you making you wonder if you were even going to make it to the end of the day. 

Marco Polo and Francis and Denis both got threatened and attacked in Afghanistan by the same people. Marco Polo was one of 7 of his men that survived and were able to walk off and be free. The same group that attacked Marco Polo attacked Dennis and Francis and were going to kill them. Eventually the group talked to the men and found out that they meant no harm. The thing that saved Denis and Francis was Francis's cigarettes that he had in his shirt pocket that distracted the person who wanted to shoot him.

They both were very close on the route they took and the experiences they had in the Walkhan corridor. 

During both Denis and Francis's journey, they traveled through the Wakhan Corridor. They both rode on camels through open, freezing, desert- like terrain. There were strong winds and elevated parts of the path which were over 900,000 feet above sea level so they had to be careful. Marco Polo wrote about seeing the sheep horns on the path and the men knew exactly what he was talking about when they saw them for themselves.

During his time, in order for the Khan to keep track of who to collect taxes from or how many people lived in the house, the man of the household and all of the people in his house  would write their names on the door but not the wife. If someone in the family is born, their name is added to the list. If they die, their name is crossed out. This is different from Francis and Denis's time because now people don't write on their doors, we have birth certificates and special documents to keep track of those things that people in Marco Polo's time would of had to write on their door. 

When Marco Polo was in China he described Kashgar  as the starting point for trade and industry. There were merchants encouraging people to buy their goods where ever you looked. When Francis and Denis were in China they noticed the same thing and they used these people to prepare for where they were going next on their journey.

During Marco Polo's time period he saw the New York Harbor where European ships would have been docked and it would have been really busy. When Denis and Francis arrived in the same place it didn't look as busy or as big and there were hardly any boats or people there at all.

He talks about how inviting the mongols are and also talks about how they cut their sheep. When Denis and Francis arrived in Mongolia they noticed the same things when it came to how nice the people were and how happy and curious they were about Denis and Francis and their Marco Polo journey. The men also noticed similarities when it came down to their housing structures and how they cut their sheep. The mongols would turn the chest over on its back, made an incision into the sheep and wait until it died. They then used every part of the sheep that they could, including the blood and used it for food. 

There were no differences between Francis and Dennis and Marco Polo. Everything from the way the people acted, the way the housing was built and the way the sheep was cut was the same. Francis even said in the video, "It was endless. I did some research on what it would be like to live there and what makes Hong Kong so special and I found out some pretty cool things. I like skyscrapers in general, especially at night and based on the pictures I found, Hong Kong would be a pretty beautiful place to be at night. Also, there are really nice hiking trails and places to sight see and learn about.

Personally speaking, I never how different but cool the Middle East was until I actually went there and got to see all of the different cultures and ways people lived. The lesson that I think Dennis and Francis got out of this journey was to think outside the box. Don't take the world we live on for granted so often. He couldn't even if he wanted to, but Marco Polo didn't take an airplane. During today's time period it would have been the easiest way and that's what Francis and Dennis were tempted to do but they didn't and because of that they traveled the whole way there discovering new terrains, meeting new people and gaining a new perspective on the world around them which I think helped them value the trip a lot more. ]]> 2017-11-22 01:05:39 UTC https://padlet.com/20ohl01/8qppkvaf902a/wish/209305361
