I chose this to be in my portfolio because it shows my creativity and writing working together. Each piece was carefully thought out along with the images on the pages. I incorporated my real life experiences into this poem, allowing me to pour my feelings into the portfolio. I spent a lot of time on each poem, ensuring that each work was the best of my work. Even the cover page has meaning. I selected the theme of growing up for my poems and to match that I made the portfolio feel like a childhood book. This portfolio is one of my proudest works, I really liked everything about it and poured a lot of emotion into it.

My STAR test scores has shown my improvement over the past year. I started at 12.1 and now have a 12.9/13/PHS. I've been a consistent reader this past year.

I believe I deserve an A in this English class because I have consistently demonstrated dedication, responsibility, and a strong work ethic throughout the year. From the beginning of the semester, I have made it a priority to stay on top of all assignments, participate actively in class discussions, and continuously improve my writing skills. At every quarter checkpoint, I earned an A, which reflects not only my academic performance but also the consistent effort I have put into every task. For each major project, I took the time to plan, revise, and ensure that it was submitted before the due date. I’ve also made an effort to contribute thoughtfully in group activities and peer reviews. I’ve also contributed to group activities and peer reviews, making sure I gave and received thoughtful feedback. Overall, I believe my performance in this class shows that I’ve not only met but exceeded the expectations, and I’ve grown as a student and a writer. My consistent effort and commitment to improvement are why I feel I have earned an A.

For speaking and listening, I listed both my debate and my podcast. I was excited to start the podcast, especially with my book club group. We planned ahead for each podcast and even made sure to accommodate for when a group member was missing. For me, it was hard to start the podcast/ say my parts because I laugh at everything. After a while, I was able to calm down and say my parts at the right time. The episodes took a lot of breaks, planning, and adjusting but I was happy with them at the end. We were able to rehearse our parts and record it in the time we had. I also had to make sure everyone said their lines clearly and loudly enough for the phone to pick it up. When editing, I had to listen carefully to the recordings and make sure I was cutting out the right parts.

For speaking and listening, I listed both my debate and my podcast. I was nervous at first about my debate. I wasn’t sure if I could handle being in the spotlight. But after being reassured by my partner, I was confident in my writing and speaking. In our debate, due to our uneven amount of people, I had to speak 2 times and my partner 1. I made sure to speak slowly when I needed a few seconds and made sure to speak fast when I wanted my information heard. During the debate, I was still very nervous and was actually shaking while I was speaking but overtime I calmed down. I also made sure to listen to what the other side said, to make sure I argued against their attacks. Compared to the beginning of the year, I’m more confident in my speaking skills. I ended up winning the debate so I'm even more confident.

These two monthly reflections that I have here show my habits. While I didn’t meet each goal, I always attempted to. I usually completed my reading, personal, family, and some education goals. The goals usually were listed like: do (something) (number) of times per week. This shows that I followed these habits and created new ones. I always participated when we had the check ins, making sure to tell my group mates. Whenever I had a question, I made sure I asked the question by the end of class or communicated outside of class via schoology email. Whenever I got feedback, I made sure to accommodate the requests/ suggestions made while still keeping the original.

Something that brings my grade down are a few discussion boards/writing assignments that I missed. For the CM population map, I was out of the state for my grandma’s funeral. I didn’t have any time to work during the funeral because I was busy the entire time. To be frank, I didn’t want to do a lot of work when I came back either. I was still grieving and had 1 ½ weeks worth of work for all of my classes to catch up on. For the Musical Argument, I missed that school day because it was for A Day without Immigrants. Something I’m passionate about because, especially in California, immigrants are very important to the economy and my life. The assignment itself I was a bit confused about but we were already moving on to the next assignments. These small writing assignments that I missed aren’t a reflection of my true writing ability or time management.

Despite a few missed assignments due to personal circumstances and advocacy that are meaningful to me, I believe these instances do not reflect the overall quality of my work or my commitment to this class. I’ve shown consistent effort, maintained strong grades throughout each quarter, and have grown both as a writer and as a student. The dedication I’ve shown all year, paired with the care I put into each major assignment, demonstrates the qualities of a student who deserves an A. I hope that the work I’ve done and the challenges I’ve faced are considered together as part of the bigger picture of my progress and performance in this class.
