Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite. It is also referred to as "Trich". It is one of the most common STI's with more than 3 million cases per year. Men typically have no symptoms with this infection however women tend to be more symptomatic. Trichomoniasis is short-term if treated properly and can be cured within days to weeks.

Trichomoniasis is caused by a protozoa parasite called "Trichomonas Vaginalis".

SYMPTOMS

Trichomoniasis causes a foul-smelling vaginal discharge, genital itching, and painful urination in women. Men typically have no symptoms. However, if men do have symptoms, they will typically experience froth-like discharge from penis, burning after ejaculation and painful urination.

Trichomoniasis can cause women to give birth prematurely. It can also cause low birth weight in the baby.

If left untreated, Trichomoniasis increases the risk of HIV and cervical cancer.

TREATMENT

Treatment for Trichomoniasis requires an oral antibiotic. The following are all antibiotics that can be taken for treatment of Trichomoniasis: Metronidazole (Flagyl), Tinidazole (Tindamax), or Secnidazole (Solosec).
