"He noticed me then. I could feel his eyes on my burning face, but I looked only at the hem of the coat that I held in my lap. My heart pounded as I heard his steps on the floor... he moved closer to me. "You aren't afraid of me, are you?" he paused." (Back of the book)

Bella started her life with her mother and father, she loved to go to plays and always dreamed of being on stage. Later, as she went to stand up to him, she realized that she had been played, he held a gun and locked her in a cabinet. She heard the commotion as the president had been killed. When she tried to return to normal life by going to a new theater to work. when she told Steven everything that she had done when he came to find her, she ended up confessing her crimes, but was excused from all of it by an officer who "didn't believe her".

"Ah fair Bella, I regret what happened to you. Truly I do, but I want the world to know that I could have not spared you. No, no, I couldn't. you were part of a plan, a plan much larger, and much more important than one girl, no matter how sweet."(back of the book)

John is from Maryland and is 26. As an actor, he was greatly loved. He joined the Southern Army when he learned that Abraham Lincoln had become president. After his serves, he falls in love with a girl named Lucy as she is on a date with Lincon's eldest son. Afterward, he starts to work in Ford's theater. When he is working there, he meets Bella, and as they talk, he realizes the usefulness that she holds for him. So, he tries and build their bond so she will be more willing to do what he says. During all of this, Booth thinks that Bella hates the Union, and wants a new president like he does. When Booth revealed the starting plan to her, she was hesitant, so by telling her that it would be no big deal, they would not harm Lincon, and it would ensure her father's safety, she agreed. So, he gathers all of his other friends that he met in the army to help him out. He plans to kidnap Lincon when he is on his way to an army base, but things change. Richmond fell to the Union, and Lincon was on his way over there, instead of where Booth had stationed his men. They all went back to Washington City and stayed in a hotel. However, the very next day, the war had ended. This sent Booth into a depressive spiral and he drank for a few days until he came up with a new plan. When he walked to Ford's theatre, he saw that a lot was going on, furniture being moved, and things being cleaned. And as it turned out, Lincon and a few other officials were going to see a play. This sparked the idea of the assassination.

"quickly took the revolver from my pocket, aimed, and fired"(184)

The plan at first was not to kill the president, Booth had planned to station at one of the camps that Lincoln rides to on horse. He would use Bella to know when Lincoln left the White House. When she went and gave them the go-ahead, things changed. Richmond had called not the union, and Lincoln went over there to celebrate and most likely to give a speech. Booth was devastated about this, and the announcement of the war ending, and the North being victorious didn’t help.

Later, he was walking about Washington City, he stumbled upon the Ford’s Theater. All of the people inside looked like they were getting ready for something. They said that the Lincolns, and some other officials, were going. To see a comedy that night, that is when he got the last idea.

While they were setting up for the play the next day, he prepared a peep hole that would allow him to see the Theater without being spotted. That is when Arabella walks on him drilling the whole under the stage. That is when Booth pulled a gun out on her. Booth forced her into a closet that was in the basement and made sure that she could not escape. Once the play began, Booth used the sounds of the laughs and the claps to cover up his presence, and before anyone knew it, the president was shot.
