The Ottoman rulers, like most of their subjects were Muslim.They permitted religious minorities like the Armenians to maintain so autonomy, but they also subjected Armenians, who they viewed as "infidels" to unequal and unjust treatment. Christians had to pay higher taxes than Muslims, for example, and they had very few political and legal rights.

At the end of 19th century, the despotic Turkish Sultan Abdul Hamid ll - obsessed with loyalty above all, and infuriated by the Armenian campaign to win basic civil rights- declared that he would solve the "Armenian question" once and for all. "I will soon settle with those Armenians," he told a reporter in 1890. "I will give them a box on the ear which will make them... relinquish their revolutionary ambitions."

A group of reforms who called themselves "Young Turks" overthrew Sultan Abdul Hamid and established a modern constitutional government. Armenians hoped that "Young Turks" coming to power was good for them but they soon learned what nationalistic Young Turks wanted most of all to "Turkify" the empire. Then the Turks entered the World War l . And the Armenians were eager to help the enemies, and this is what caused the Turkish government to push the "removal" of the Armenians. On April 24, 1915 the genocide began. That day, the Turkish government arrested and executed several hundreds Armenian intellectuals. After that, ordinary Armenians were turned out of their homes and send on death marches  through the Mesopotamian desert without food or water. Frequently, the marchers were stripped naked and forced to walk under the scorching sun until they dropped dead. People who stopped to rest were shot.

After, another law passed stating that every Armenian's land shall be confiscated. They were also ordered to turn in any weapons they owned into the authorities. The Armenians in the military were sent to labor battalions where they were sent to either get killed or worked to death. This then led to the brutal executions of Armenians.

The Young Turks created a special organization in which they made organized “killing squads” or “butcher battalions”. The Turks in this organization are murderers and ex-convicts. They would brutality kill people by, drowning them in rivers, throwing them off cliffs,  and burning them alive.

The Turks were the powerful ones overpowering the Armenians and convinced the people to side with the Turks themselves. The Turks used propaganda and technically used it to influence and persuade other people in Turkey to side the Turks instead of helping the Armenians. Propaganda had harsh words and deep meanings which triggered many people around the world.

The persecution of the Armenians consisted of discriminatory taxes being placed upon the Armenians, followed by the deportation of 2 million Armenians, disguised as resettlement, because the Armenians sided against the Turks. Millions were forced to walk across a desert without a drop of water, many forced to travel without clothing, where many died or were massacred.
