“A Hen-Made Tale, The Dance” is a Malaysia children's dance theatre performance that was shown at PJPAC, Selangor between 25th and 29th September 2024. It was produced and co-directed by Kenny Shim, and the plot was adapted from the children's book "A Hen-Made Tale” by Lim Soon Heng. The rooster and the Hen were played by Lim Kien Lee and Bryan Chan. The remaining cast and dancers included Kimberly Yap, Sera Nina, Nadhirah Rahmat and many more. The story is about a rooster crows being transported to an egg-producing farm where one of the hens, after laying an egg, suggests organising a holiday to celebrate the hens’ hard work. While every hen is happy about the idea, not every farm animal agrees, fearing that they might end up as a dinner. As tension is rising, the hens decide to devise a plan to secure their holiday, but things do not go well with everyone. The believable acting skills, interesting costumes and make-up, as well as the relatable lighting and music design, made the show interesting as the audience are able to see and pay attention throughout the story.

The Rooster and the cat played the character very well with professional acting skills, allowing the audience to believe the character on stage. From the body language and movement of the rooster, it is apparent that he is a very proud and high status chicken. In one of the scenes where the rooster came out on stage, his confident and steady steps with his head held high up and shoulders back, show that he was very proud of himself that he made the 4 hen to lay eggs everyday and also show off his capability of letting the hen lay eggs for 365 days. Besides, when the 4 hens danced, he was given respect and he only needed to sit in the middle to watch the hen. He nodded his head to indicate that it was a good dance and only when he was willing to dance, he danced with the hens. These strongly mention that he is a high status animal compared to the others. Next, the cat shows characteristics of being mischievous and sexy in her body movement. Example, we can see the cat moving silently with the soft and light steps during the scene when the cat tried to steal the egg and hide it somewhere, and also sneakily went to the chicken coops to do something bad to cause trouble. “The job of the dancers is to bring the choreography to life with emotion and commitment, like an actor brings a life to the script.” (Gelsey Kirkland, 1986, p.33). It is believable that the cat has a sexy characteristic because her enchanting steps and she keeps bending her bodies especially during the dance, creates a visual feeling that the cat is showing her sexy and naughty identity in this dance.

“A costume is not just about clothing, it is a transformation of the actor into their characters. It helps to define their movement, their posture, and even how they speak.” (Anne Roth, 2012, p.162). The costumes made by Malin Faisal and make-up by Gunasegeran Selvadurai satisfied both dancing and acting aspects for the rooster and the cat in the play, which made them look interesting. Both of the costumes are tight fit and flexible to have big body movement during the dance. The close-fitting clothes also allow the rooster to show his muscles to the fullest, allowing the actor to blend with the character to make the performance more believable. Example, during the 2-minute dance, the cat was doing a split and the costume stretched very well to let her dance safely. Moreover, the shirt of the rooster was also designed in a different colour to evoke its playful and strong personality. The make-up for the

rooster is most likely red so that its identity of the colour red was clearly shown in the whole play. Furthermore, the cat is designed to be dressed fully in black and an eye mask. The full black costume helps to slim her body shape, and the eye mask acts as a sexy element for the character, allowing the audience to retain the curiosity and desire to learn about the cat.

It is noticeable that the lighting and music design played an important role for this play. The lighting was set from many directions so all actors can be seen wherever they are on stage acting or dancing. They created lights from down stage for the rooster and the cat to show some hard shadow on them when the plot is getting a bit tense. The lighting also made good use of colouring to blend up the stage with different colours so the stage looks more attractive especially when the characters were dancing. They showed red colour when the rooster was the main focus dancing on the stage. On the other hand, the music design fitted the feeling and tone for the play. Example, the music was designed to be a little sultry and slinky when the cat was dancing her smooth and sexy movement. The music was also joyful and upbeat which was suitable for the dance and also matched with the story. The melody was also soft and cheering for the children as they will not feel too noisy throughout the whole play.

In conclusion, the rooster and the cat performed well for this play with believable acting skills, interesting costumes and make-up, as well as the plot-relatable lighting and music design. Based on the director's perspective, this play is not exactly a performance to show an interesting story plot or to bring up conflicts between two characters as children will find it difficult to understand. It is a stage for dancers to explore and devise dance movements for different characters like rooster, hen, cat and so on, to make it more enjoyable and uplifting especially for the children. Except for children, this show is recommended for the audiences who like choreography, or people who are willing to explore various types of art form. It is hoped that audiences are able to find this play interesting and have some takeaway to reflect or discuss together with people that are interested with this show as well.

This subject threw me back to the time when I was learning writing in my high school. Time passes fast and week 14 is getting closer to us. The learning journey of the subject is to help us to learn more different skills, and to strengthen our writing skills in our writing paper using different writing methods. In this class, I have learned that citations have different types of format to do with different types of citations. This is the first time I think that this exercise was easy for me. In Week 9 and 10, we finished our critical analysis paper and started to do a presentation. The theatre show I watched is “A Hen Made Tale, The Dance”. It has become a challenge for me because I was required to watch a live theatre show to collect notes for the presentation. It was a children's theatre show. After that, when it came to the discussion between me and my partner to work on the presentation, I felt very hard and sad because my partner, Adam, has been sick all the time and I need to back up the work. He has not been to most of the class, so I always have to inform him of the updates in class. However, we have spent some time talking and understanding each other. Then, we figure out what brings up the music of each character as both of our witten papers were not the same. During the presentation, we didn't expect that our presentation was very short which made the lecturer and classmate don't get much information in the presentation.

To conclude my overall reflection, my concern and challenge is always my English Language level. Although I have received a credit in my IGCSE Second Language English examination, I still noticed that it was very hard because I’m a Chinese speaker and live with a Chinese family and friends. It took some time for me to enter an English environment and to get used to it, especially talking in English. Throughout the process I’m glad myself keep going step by step to go all along the process. Also, I have noticed myself being better and clearer in English speaking although I knew that I was still not that good, but I’m proud of myself seeing myself improving a lot in English Language writing and talking. Lastly, I’m thankful to Miss Neera, our lecturer who led us to the end of semester. I know I have caused some inconvenience and misunderstanding to you, but I am truly thankful of you being truthful and patient with me and us throughout the semester.
