I feel that I really grew in my artwork through this project because not only was I able to work with a new material (oil paint), I was able to really try and grasp the fundamentals of painting. The figure painting also helped to expand my area of expertise in the class because I realized my full potential. I based this painting off the body of marilyn monroe. Although, I cropped her body to fit only her midsection, and added color to the composition in order to draw attention to the outline of her curves. I feel that the strongest aspect about the painting would most likely be the shading of the swimsuit. Throughout the second semester, I have ventured into areas that I have previously been extremely uncomfortable with, such as figure painting, and using oil and watercolor in my artwork. Previously, I stuck to strictly using oil pastel and graphite pencil to create art. But the farther the class went, I discovered other strengths with using various sorts of paint. Besides growing through using different media, I also feel that I grew conceptually throughout the duration of the semester. I feel that I have grown more abstract in my artwork, by instead of drawing simple objects, I chose to creatively distort them and add more dimension to them. I feel that I have also worked on conveying certain messages within my artwork. For instance, in my watercolor and pen artwork, I was able to convey a sort of hazy and recollective atmosphere that could relate back to the theme of "childhood dreaming." Also, in my figure painting, I was able to showcase the theme of feminism. The women's figure that has been cropped to her mid-section helps symbolize the beauty and captivating power that a woman's physique embodies. By working more on conveying themes through my artwork, I feel that this has been the greatest way that I have grown as an artist. I feel that I learned most from trial and error when experimenting with different paint material like oil, watercolor, and acrylic. I experimented when mixing colors and adding color to the paint soluble. This has been the first time that I really worked with paint and now, I feel fairly confident to use it in other projects for the future! In the future, I would like to continue to grow as an artist conceptually and also by experimenting with different medias.
