Two boys thought it would be a good idea to sneak into a school to play basketball after hours. Tino pressured the author, Luis, to jump the fence even though Luis knew it was a bad idea. To prove his point, the cps showed up soon after and started to chase the boys. A deputy ended up catching the author while his friend ran, leading to Tino seemingly having jumped off the roof

"Tino and I strolled past the stucco and wood-frame homes of the neighborhood consisting mostly of Mexicans with a sprinkling of poor white families (usually from Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas). Ranchera music did battle with Country and Western songs as we continued toward the local elementary school, an oil-and-grime stained basketball under my arm." This really shows me the image of the setting of the story and the type of area where these boys are from.

"It never stopped, this running. We were constant prey, and the hunters soon became big blurs: the police, the gangs, the junkies, the dudes on Garvey Boulevard who took our money, all smudged into one. Sometimes they were teachers who jumped on us Mexicans as if we were born with a hideous stain. We were always afraid. Always running." This sows us the significance of what was going on and how the author really felt in the situation.

"The gusts proved no obstacle for a half-court game of B-ball, even as dark clouds smothered the sky." This is a beautiful sentence to me. I think this because you can see what they truly wanted to do, that they were just 10 year old boys who wanted to play basketball. That things just got blown way out of proportion, this line in the story is so calm and collected. This line is beautiful because it is the line before the storm.

"Shining a flashlight inside the building, the officer spotted Tino’s misshapen body on the floor, sprinkled over with shards of glass." This line is another beautiful line. This is the end all be all line, you don't know what happens next, you wont know based on the excerpt that we read, through this line we just have to wonder and infer to ourselves.
