One of the things my family includes as a side dish that I think is pretty uncommon is lobster and yellow tail. This year, the yellow tail was caught by our family friend that we celebrate Thanksgiving with every year. He caught it on a fishing trip in San Diego/Mexico and my dad cooked it. I always enjoy this Thanksgiving tradition as seafood is some of my favorite food. -Mitchel Savery-Orton

Every year, my family makes Portuguese sweet rolls for Thanksgiving. Lately I've been taking some to my fiance's family's Thanksgiving as well and they're a big hit. I need to learn how to make them myself. They're essentially the same as Hawaiian rolls and are actually where Hawaiian rolls came from, since Portuguese immigrants brought them there. We shape them into crescent rolls usually. - Kaitlynn Gracia

A tradition that my family does for Thanksgiving is eating prime rib, rather than turkey. No one in my family enjoys turkey very much. We started this about 5 years ago and haven't gone back to turkey. It works out well because you don't have to worry about it being sold out compared to turkey. I enjoy this tradition because I don't ever eat prime rib, so this is the one time of year we cook it!
-Taylor Kirk

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday of the year. For the past couple of years, I have been helping my mom make dessert for Thanksgiving. We make a couple of different desserts, but my favorite dessert is sweet potato casserole. It's simple to make and it's delicious. All you need are some sweet potatoes, ½ of brown sugar, ⅓ of butter, ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract, ¾ of pecans, ¼ teaspoon of cinnamon, a bit of salt, 2 cups of mini marshmallows.

-Jordi Lopez

Every thanksgiving it is tradition to make hot chocolate before we start cooking. It is usually this fancy hot chocolate mix my grandma buys as well as homemade marshmallows she makes the night before. They are super fluffy & vanilla flavored. I am usually in charge of making whipped cream for it & it all ends up pairing so well. Pretty simple but always look forward to that!

My family has been doing the same tradition since my dad was a little boy. The day after thanksgiving my family and all my cousins (so about 25 people) go up a certain fire road in order to find a good spot to hike and find the perfect Christmas tree. We jump in the back of trucks and head up the mountain together. It truly brings the family together. It always consists of us having a nice lunch in the wilderness. This is my favorite tradition because we always get the freshest and most beautiful tree. It is very cost-efficient compared to buying a tree in a lot. The best part is we always do this in Oregon so we get to hike through lots of snow.

Every single year my whole family and I meet up at my aunts house in arroyo grande and we all get assigned a different side of food or appetizer to bring to Thanksgiving! This year I tried my best to make the stuffing! Probably not the best they’ve ever seen but it wasn’t horrible!! Right after dinner we put all of our names on a slip of paper and put it into a hat and we go around picking names for secret Santa, it’s actually pretty exciting! After that we just plan on what to get for the person we chose out of the hat then meet up again during Christmas to reveal who we had!!

Brady Haycraft

Every year it is requested that I prepare and bring this delicious dish. And every year the dish is completely gone with no left overs.

Ingredients
Mashed sweet potatoes:
3 to 3- ¼ pounds sweet potatoes* peeled and chopped into large chunks
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
¼ cup milk or half and half
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice
2 tablespoons brown sugar
salt to taste
Topping:
4 tablespoons unsalted butter softened
¼ cup brown sugar
¼ cup all purpose flour for a sturdier streusel add and additional heaping tablespoon of flour
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
⅛ teaspoon salt
½ cup chopped pecans
3 cups mini marshmallows or more, if you'd like

Instructions
Mashed sweet potatoes:
Preheat oven to 375°F. Grease a 2 or 2 ½ quart casserole dish (preferably a rectangle or oval so there's a decent surface area for the topping. I use an 8x11) and set aside.
Place the sweet potatoes in a large pot, cover with water, and boil until tender (about 7 minutes, depending on the size). Drain really well and return to the pot. Add butter, milk, cinnamon, brown sugar and salt to the potatoes and mash until smooth. Use a hand mixer, if desired, to make them extra smooth. Taste the potatoes and add additional seasonings, if desired.
Transfer the mashed potatoes to the prepared casserole dish. Place in the oven until heated through 25 min. While the sweet potatoes are heating, prepare the topping.
Topping:
In a medium bowl, combine butter, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt (I use a fork or rubber spatula to stir and mash the mixture), then mix in pecans.
Remove the sweet potatoes from the oven. Top with half the marshmallows, then sprinkle half the streusel over the marshmallows (pinching pieces together with your fingers). Top with the other half of the marshmallows and sprinkle the remaining streusel over the top. Place back into the oven for 8-15 minutes, until the topping is bubbly and golden brown (keep an eye on it so the marshmallows don't burn). You can also place it under the broiler very briefly to add a little more color to the marshmallows. Note: the longer it is in the oven the more likely that the marshmallows will begin to melt. Allow to sit at room temperature for several minutes before serving.

Thanksgiving with Friends

As a Canadian with most family back in Canada, I often spend Thanksgiving with friends. I don't have any Thanksgiving traditions as it isn't really a holiday in Canada like in the US... we have Canada Day, La St-Jean, and others. I personally find Thanksgiving to be a disturbing holiday for a variety of reasons. Both Canada and the US partook in genocide, of people and culture. I love stuffing though, and cranberry sauce.
