Part I - Students will work in small groups assuming the roles of art historians, technology experts, and detectives that are pursuing a criminal involved in art masterpiece thefts. Students will be given clues to find eight masterpieces in the WebMuseum before Art Burglar, the criminal, takes possession of the paintings. Students will learn about various art styles and periods of art. They will also follow subsequent clues to associate the artwork with a historical aspect of that period. The students will be responsible for a multi-media presentation of their results in this web quest.

The web quest investigates how world events influence the artwork of artists. Historical events become vivid by studying the art of past cultures. What influences the artist and his artwork? How does studying the visual arts of various cultures help us understand the values that the people of those cultures hold? Students will be prompted to comprehend that an understanding, tolerance, and respect of difference cultures is a desirable characteristic that is relevant in today’s world and workplace.

Students will practice or acquire computer skills in searching, copying, pasting, saving, and multi-media design. They will also practice or acquire skills pertaining to presenting, planning, deductive reasoning, cooperative learning behaviors, digital photography, verbal and written articulation, leadership, and assessment.

Students in this project will identify and analyze examples of melodies by well-known composers that use two of the most common formal constructs, AB and ABA form. They will then improvise simple melodies (perhaps eight to twelve measures each) using these forms. Students will then divide into small groups that include students of different levels of experience and varied instrumentation, and write an original composition using either of these forms. Students will perform and critique each group’s compositions, then record a performance of their compositions and publish them on a podcast. A local composer, perhaps from a college music department, will be invited in for an informal discussion with students where students can ask questions about the compositional process and the use of form in composition. This composer will then be available throughout the project via technology tools to discuss student work and participate in the evaluation process where possible.

Place pictures and photos of various cars, and trucks around the room. Include in the photos broken down vehicles, and garages. This should get the students to start thinking about not just driving the vehicle, but also about maintaining it. Consider placing issues of magazines such as Car and Driver and Popular Mechanics around the room.

When Two Worlds CollideProject Idea:	Students will research online databases, art history books and other print resource media to obtain the information about artists from various eras and countries and study many artworks these artists created. Combining information about two artists from different eras, students will create an original artwork. Then, they will collaborate with members of the local art group to plan and host a public art exhibit of these works.Entry Event:	Advanced Placement art students will perform a scene between two artists for the Art I students. The scene will be a conversation about their art styles, artwork, and main events in their lives that affect their artwork. AP students will be in costume and try to carry themselves so the audience can figure out what artist they are portraying. Art I Students will take notes as they watch the scene so they can discuss who the AP students are portraying. They then will receive their packet of information about the artists to research. Student will have time to review the packet; after which there will be a discussion about the upcoming project.

Art Takes You PlacesProject Idea:	Students will explore the connection of local history and culture to their state’s artists and will discover how these artists created a sense of place with their artworks. They will accomplish this through research from online databases, print media, and interviews of people, and by sharing their investigations on a class blog. Using a medium and a shading technique of their choice, they will create drawings of meaningful places in their county. Finally, each group will produce a virtual art gallery of their drawings, weaving their stories about the special places into this art gallery. Students will have the opportunity to be creative in this process. After their virtual art galleries are presented to parents and community members, their work will be published on the local newspaper’s website.Entry Event:	The editor of the local newspaper will visit the classroom to introduce the newspaper’s new website to the students. Next he/she will invite the students to produce virtual art galleries to be posted on this website. The goal of these galleries is to communicate a sense of place to those who visit the website from other regions as well as to local citizens. The editor will present and discuss a memo (Memo for Entry Event) delineating the parameters of the project.
