In the story it talks about how Grendel could carry 30 dead people after he killed them. This leads me to believe that he is strong and powerful and in order for him to do that he has to be big. I know that he is hairy because it the story it says that the blood clumped the hair on his chest together. Grendel also rips people apart and kills them and i dont think a man could do all of that on his own.
