Police arrested Clarence Earl Gideon after they saw him at the pint of wine and some change in his pockets. Gideon could not afford a lawyer, so he asked a judge in the Florida Circuit Court to appoint one for him. The judge denied his request to a lawyer and he was just left to represent himself. He went to court without a lawyer and did a poor job at representing himself.
