Throughout the poem, the speaker of the story describes to readers that telling the truth may be too harsh for others. Emily Dickinson states that "the truth must dazzle gradually or every man be blind." In the poem, the "truth" that Emily Dickinson is referring to is death. When being told the whole truth, it may shock or affect others life. Emily Dickinson argues that it would be better to lessen the affect by sugarcoating or giving an indirect description of the full truth. Dickinson informs the readers passive aggressively of how the world can not fear of the truth forever because it enhances ignorance. Emily Dickinson states in the beginning of the poem, "tell all the truth but tell it slant". As an example of a metaphor, Emily Dickinson compares "lightning to the children" and the truth to others. To elaborate, lightning is difficult to explain to children since they wouldn't completely understand it. Dickinson uses lightning as a comparison to the truth by communicating that the truth should be soften since it may be difficult for others to understand. In addition, imagery is described in the poem when Dickinson states, "every man be blind". Readers can visually imagine the scene of a man being blinded. She uses images such as lightning to compare her message with common teachings, "as lightning to the children ease/ with explanation kind". Kids are usually reassured when lightning or thunderstorms occur. These parents usually have a delightful way of coping with their kid's fear. Emily Dickinson starts off with the booming line of telling the truth but slant.
