Observation

Observation can be done in two places: a controlled environment or an uncontrolled environment (the everyday world). A strong advantage for observational research is the fact that, rather than asking questions that may be leading, the researcher will be able to see the way an individual acts in certain situations. One of the biggest disadvantages of this type of research is that the person being observed often knows that they are being observed, which could (and most likely will) cause them to act differently than they would when they are not being observed.

Survey and Interview

This type of study involves the asking of questions to the people you are researching. An advantage of this type of research is that humans, being highly social creatures, are more than likely willing to answer questions about themselves and the world in which they live. A disadvantage of surveying and interviewing is that the interviewee possess the capacity to be dishonest. Another problem is that some questions can be worded to prompt the person being questioned to give the answer that the researcher was looking for.

Standardized Test

Humans are introduced to standardized test very early on in life. Whether it's the CRCT's or SAT's, most humans have experience with this type of research. This type of research allows the researcher to gather information from a multitude of subjects and can come to a conclusion based upon the information gather from the test. A problem with this type of research is that the setting in which these tests are conducted can have a large influence on the test subject. A person in a controlled setting (i.e. a lab, classroom, etc) may experience stress in this type of setting. Therefore, the results may not factually represent the intelligence of the individual.

This type of research relies on physical aspects more so that the thoughts and actions of an individual. This includes the use of medical apparatuses in order to gather information. This type of research can be very effective in studying development because the information found can be compared to that found from others who have undergone the same research. A disadvantage to this type of research is that while most people develop at a similar rate, there are always exceptions.
