Economy and GDP of Xinjiang

Xinjiang is one of the poorest regions of China, with one of the lowest GDPs per capita. These maps show the correlation between the GDP per capita and ethnicity. As we can see, the area with the most intense concentration of Uyghur Muslims, is also the poorest area of Xinjiang. The areas with Han Chinese, are also the richest parts of Xinjiang, showing a direct correlation between ethnicity and GDP per capita. In general, however, the zone in itself is very poor which discourages people from migrating there, and encourages people to migrate to the East in search of better oppurtunities.

The Uyghur Muslims are the largest minority population in China. The majority of them live in Xinjiang and have formed their own autonomous region, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR). China has been accused of detaining over 1 million Uyghurs (1 in 12 of their population) in 're-education camps, where they are abused, tortured, and used as forced labor. There have been other allegations of sexual abuse, and of forcefully sterilizing women. China has denied all allegations and said that these camps were to combat separatism and Islamic militancy.

Source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-22278037

Climate in Xinjiang

The Climate in Xinjiang is very diverse, as it has a desert area in it and it is also covered with large Mountains. Because of this it has a very dry climate, as it is not close to any big sources of water. The Temperatures vary as in the Tarim Basin region in january the average temperature is -7°C and in Junggar Basin the average temperature is -15°C. During July the average temperature of the Junggar Basin is 21°C in the north and in the south of the region averages up to 27°C. The hottest part in the Xinjiang region is called the Turfan depression in which the temperature can go up to 49°C, and in July its average temperature is 32°C. The precipitation in this region is insufficient with the annual rainfall being about 6.5 inches.
https://www.britannica.com/place/Xinjiang/Climate

Terrain in Xinjiang

Xingjiang's geography is one of the main reasons behind the region's sparse populations. Its terrain includes significant areas of mountains, reaching heights over 7,000 meters, and mostly covered by snow. Because of this, farming in most of the land is not possible. Additionally, Xingjiang contains little bodies of water; the only rivers accessible only provide water at times during the year, making them unreliable most of the time. All of these factors combined would make it hard to sustain dense populations with vital survival resources, such as water, food, and healthcare facilities.
