A PMHNP can work in both outpatient and inpatient facilities such as hospitals, private practices, assisted living facilities, correctional facilities, and rehab facilities. A PMHNP tends to work full-time with 40-hour weeks. Additionally, those in hospital settings might need to be on-call. However, a PMHNP is known to be a career with a good work life balance due to having days during the week off and depending when your shifts are. A PMHNP has autonomy in the workplace for certain tasks, but ultimately a PMHNP works with the patient's care team. The job is physically demanding due to sometimes needing to restrain patients or physical interventions. Also, the job requires you to be sitting, standing, running, lifting, etc. The job is also emotionally demanding because sometimes when patients see a PMHNP they are in crisis or having a mental episode.

https://www.goodwin.edu/enews/what-is-it-like-to-be-psychiatric-nurse-practitioner/

There are a lot of qualifications needed in order to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. First, you need to go to nursing school and either earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN). Second, you need to pass the NCLEX-RN Exam. Third, you need to gain experience working as a registered nurse for a few years. Fourth, earn a nursing graduate degree like a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). Lastly, earn your Psychiatric Mental Health Certification and Nurse Practitioner License. The main skills and traits a PMHNP has are communication skills, compassion, and sensitivity. In high school, the classes and extracurricular activities that would be valuable are volunteering at local hospitals, taking AP Math and Science classes, and shadowing programs.

https://www.franklin.edu/blog/how-to-become-a-psychiatric-nurse-practitioner

https://onlinenursing.baylor.edu/news/what-does-psychiatric-nurse-practitioner-do#:~:text=PMHNPs%20work%20with%20diverse%20patients,trusting%20and%20effective%20therapeutic%20relationships.

https://nursejournal.org/ask-a-nurse/what-can-high-schoolers-do-to-become-a-registered-nurse/
