  • The grammar translation method derived from the classical/ traditional teaching method used to teach Greek and Latin. 
  • Started in the 1840s in Europe and was the dominant teaching method for the next 100 years.
  • This method was a means to to translate both into and from native languages and is based on the written words and texts.
  • Use of GTM slowed down due to a greater demand for people to speak other languages, however it is still in practice today.
