It's on a volunteer basis, and I give bonus points. I have a Google Doc that describes the roles and serves as a signup sheet. If I don't have anyone at the beginning of a class, I ask for volunteers. For, now, I have a "notetaker" and a "chat-tender."

What I want to add as part of this plan are "attendance-keeper" and "summarizer."  I envision the attendance-keeper as someone who monitors the Google Doc I have students sign in on and reminds those who haven't to do so. That way, I don't have to keep checking, and the record is more accurate.

The summarizer will be someone who helps the notetaker by providing a "takeaway" or summary of the X-number of important points at the end of the class. I can see this as being given in class so that it's on a recording but also in written form in the notes. This will also serve as a quick formative check / feedback for me.

A final change is to provide more of a standardized form for the notetaking student. I've noticed that I've had fewer volunteers, probably because students aren't always confident in their notetaking ability. I enjoy planning activities which allow them to interact with the content and with each other in small groups. My students tell me that they enjoy this collaboration, especially now.

What I need more work on is giving them the opportunity to debrief and to share their ideas with other groups. So to that end, I'm going to consciously build in more time, even if something else has to go, for debrief at the end of a breakout session to have students report on their discussions. I've tried to do this in my classroom, but I can always do more. So here is what I can do while we're still studying remotely, although I can continue once we're back face to face.

1. Pop into breakout rooms. I usually do if I feel there is a need, but sometimes the need is mine to understand rather than the students' to receive help. They don't always notice that I've popped in, but if they do, I can say that I'm just here to listen. I do the same in my F2F classroom, so this is a natural extension.
2. Ask more open ended questions. I've really tried to do more of this. With our limited time, I've observed that I'm asking more narrow questions with definitive answers. Then I'm listening to respond, not listening to understand, and I don't want to do that.
3. Give students the chance to talk more, even if it's unstructured. Right now, but even in the After Time, human beings (generally) want to connect with each other. I need to be willing to use my (admittedly limited) live meeting time for students to talk, and I need to listen.
