Commercial grain farmers sell their outputs to manufacturers of food products. The most important crop grown is wheat, used to make bread flour. Wheat can be stored easily without spoiling and can be transported easily. The US is by far the largest wheat producer among developed countries, but ranks third behind India and China. Developing countries accounted for more than 1/2 of wheat production in 2010, compared to 1/4th in 1960. Individuals have 2 sets of fields - one spring wheat belt and winter wheat belt. The two regions require the same machinery, so equipment costs are high. Wheat is grown to a considerable extent for international trade and the world leading export. The US and Canada account for half the world's wheat exports.
Crops: Wheat, corn, oats, barley, rice, and millet.
Where is it found?: Commercial Grain Farming is found in regions that are too dry for mixed crop and livestock agriculture.
